Proponents Continue to Distort Obamacare
by Michael Busler
Any rational person who watched Harry Ried declare that all of the
negative stories about Obamacare were lies, had to feel their blood
boil. Then reading a column by Paul Krugman in The New York Times would cause that boiling blood to completely boil over.
The proponents of Obamacare say that there are millions of people who
are now paying less for their health insurance because they receive a
government subsidy. The subsidies received by people who cannot afford
to pay for their health insurance are paid for by the taxpayers.
Proponents say this is a benefit to low income people, but it is a cost
for the rest of us who pay higher taxes along with paying higher
premiums for our health insurance. Again a few people benefit while the
vast majority pay more.
Then proponents point to the increase in the number of previously
uninsured who now receive the Medicaid benefit. This is no cost to the
recipient but results in higher tax liability for the rest of us. After
all, the doctors don't work for free.
Then there is the issue of the macroeconomic effects.
It baffles me to read about learned economists who simply forgot some of
the basic laws of economics. Very simply, if the price of a product or
service is raised, there will be a reduction in the quantity demanded.
By forcing employers to pay for health care, the cost per employee
increases which simply reduces the demand for labor. That is precisely
why, after four and a half years of recovery the total number of people
working today is millions less than before the recession began.
Frankly it is understandable that people who support health care
coverage for all Americans want desperately for the Affordable Care Act
to succeed. It seems they will say whatever is necessary to reach the
goal, regardless of the truth. The facts are that millions of people
have been forced to change doctors. Tens of millions of people are
paying higher premiums and higher deductibles. Millions of people are
forced to go to hospitals not of their choosing. Tens of millions of
people have or will have their policies cancelled, even though they were
generally content with the policy they had.
Comment of Doris Parker: Well we found out something about Obamacare after our daughter lost her job on Valentine's Day. She went on that site just to find out if she would qualify after she went ahead and filed for unemployment while she is looking for a job. She is praying that she won't be unemplyed for very long as she is seeking work and not like so many that get a check every week and don't look. She is covered for insurance under the fact that she is a vet. from her being in the Army. She though always carried insuranc paid for her by her employer and herself. She lost that so here was her oppertunity to check on that insurance. Well since she will be drawing unemployment she doesn't quailfy for any so-called free insurance. The only ones that were offered to her would start at around $298.00 and she would have to pay the first $6000.00 if she went into a hospital in each year. So that would take almost a full week's of unemployment in a month. She said that she will just stay with her VA insurance as it meets the min. that is allowed under O's plan.
