A troubled nation wonders: How did we get mired in 9.1 percent unemployment, 0.9 percent growth and an economic outlook so bad that the Federal Reserve pledges to keep interest rates at zero through mid-2013 — an admission that it sees little hope on the horizon?
Bad luck, explains our president. Out of nowhere came Japan and its supply-chain disruptions, Europe and its debt problems, the Arab Spring and those oil spikes. Kicked off, presumably, by various acts of God (should He not be held accountable too?): earthquake and tsunami. (Tomorrow: pestilence and famine. Maybe frogs.)

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups have filed a lawsuit in San Francisco federal court seeking to stop a practice in which alleged illegal immigrants are shackled at the feet, waist and wrists while appearing in immigration court.

The groups allege in the suit filed Monday that a blanket policy that allows the immigrants to remain chained for up to 12 hours the day they're due in court violates constitutional bans against cruel and unusual punishment.

You may remember that Obama once derided Congress for allowing a "parade of lobbyists" to rig the process. But the man who claimed that the public deserves to know when its elected officials are talking to lobbyists, has taken to holding secret meetings with lobbyists off-campus at a townhouse on 736 Jackson Street in Washington D.C.

The other night we again watched the movie "Extremities" with Farah Fawcett.  As we were watching the attempted rape of Farah by a male intruder, we were struck by a powerful, almost overwhelming emotion for Farah to "get" the guy.  We kept hoping she would finally resist his terror and maim him, hurt him, disfigure him, bash his head in and if necessary, kill him, because that is what he deserved.  He was systematically removing every vestige of her reason to be a living, breathing and free individual, piece by piece.
