announced today that the first meeting of the bipartisan
Congressional group formed to address the ongoing debt
ceiling debate was a "good, productive first meeting." 

            The debt ceiling debate in Congress is over
            whether or not to raise the debt ceiling --
            and if so, by how much.

The federal government is expected to reach its $14.3
trillion debt limit by mid-May, but Treasury Secretary
Timothy Geithner said his department's "extraordinary
measures" could buy more time, possibly until August.

House Republicans sought to clarify a week of disparate messaging on Medicare in a Friday evening press release, announcing they are on the same page and committed to reworking entitlement programs as part of the bill to raise the debt ceiling.
Top lawmakers in the House said in the statement that “everything must be on the table except increasing taxes.”

The unified statement is in sharp contrast to the conflicting Republican statements that emerged this week on whether reforming Medicare will be part of debt ceiling talks, or a long-term goal.

“We are committed to our budget and to making the reforms necessary to grow our economy and create jobs, preserve and strengthen Medicare, and put our nation on a path to pay down the debt,” the statement reads, adding that “this has been and remains the Republican position.”

ATLANTA – Newt Gingrich, the House speaker who led a national GOP resurgence in the 1990s before facing ethics questions and resigning, is running for president.
Gingrich's announcement, made on social networking websites Monday, came after months of public flirting with a bid. He enters a slow-to-form GOP presidential field that has left some Republicans craving more options as they search for a nominee strong enough to credibly challenge President Barack Obama.
The former Georgia congressman, well-known to most Republicans, brings to the race a years-in-the-making political machine with ties to early nominating states as well as a network of supporters and donors. But his personal baggage — he's acknowledged marital infidelity and has had two divorces — could hinder his chances of winning the party's presidential nomination more than a decade after leaving the House.
Still, he spoke confidently of wide support.

ALASKA - HOW MANY AMERICANS WERE DENIED THAT JOB?

Illegal Immigrant Worked for Six Years as a Cop

Officer Rafael Espinoza of the Anchorage Police Department was arrested and fired from his job in late April when it was discovered that he was actually a Mexican national, Rafael Mora-Lopez, 47.  The true Rafael Espinoza, who has dual citizenship, lives outside of the U.S. and recently applied for a passport around the same time the officer using his name applied for a passport renewal under the same identity.

According to Anchorage Police Chief Mark mew, Mora-Lopez was hired in 2005 after passing all of the department’s background checks, including a polygraph test and a national fingerprint check. Since then he’s been a good employee, according to the police chief.  Mora-Lopez pleaded not-guilty on the count of passport fraud. His trial is set to begin June 27, 2011.  If convicted, Mora-Lopez faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Most Americans think the death penalty is a pretty good idea.  Most Americans feel there are certain crimes that the appropriate penalty is forfeiture of your life.  Murder is one of them.  Terrorism is another.  Some people think child rapists who are multiple offenders deserve the death penalty too. 

Of course, liberals being mentally ill believe that these poor killers and hardened criminals deserve a life of ease, with three hot meals a day, comfortable beds and cable TV, paid for by the tax payer.  Or better yet, “rehabilitate” them and release them back into society to offend again.

Attacking the death penalty has never been popular.  Liberals have usually paid a political price when they go after the death penalty.   Usually they resort to unelected judges to do their dirty work.
