I recently asked my friend's little girl
what she wanted to be when she grows up.
She said she wanted to be President some day.
Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her,
"If you were President, what would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people."
Her parents beamed with pride.
"Wow...what a worthy goal." I told her.
"But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that.
You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds,
and sweep my driveway, and I'll pay you $50.
Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs
out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.
She thought that over for a few seconds,
then she looked me straight in the eye and asked,
"Wouldn't it make more sense for the homeless guy to come over and do the
work, and you can just pay him the $50 directly?"
I said,
"Welcome to the Republican Party."
Her parents still aren't speaking to me.

I recently read a post from another blog that thanked contributors for making the blogger look good. Lest we forget, this isn’t about making me or anyone look good. I get plenty of ego satisfaction in my successful job and my accomplishments in life. What we are trying to do here is help educate people to turn around a rapidly deteriorating fiscal, social and international situation that threatens the survival of the country we love, which has given wonderful lives of prosperity and freedom to tens of millions. For my contributors’ efforts in that cause, everyone should thank them. This is not about me—given my health challenges, I don’t expect to be here for the worst. This is about my granddaughter and all our grandchildren, who will rightly despise us if we fail to pass on what we inherited from our grandparents. And we are failing.

On October 1 a new law banning the use of cell phones and other electronic devices while driving took effect in Nevada. As such, the Las Vegas Sun helpfully provided a primer explaining the new law which explains everything…except why anyone voted for it.
State Sen. Shirley Breeden, not exactly the deepest thinker in the Legislature, explained that the purpose of her bill, SB140, was to force drivers to “keep your hands on the wheel.” As such, “if the device needs to be in your hand as part of any function, it falls under the law and is not allowed.”
Which, of course, means you can’t use a CB radio transmitter to talk while driving, right? Wrong. The law apparently exempts CB radios. So it’s safe and legal to hold a CB radio transmitter in your hand and drive but it’s not safe and legal to hold a cell phone in your hand and drive? Yeah, that makes sense.

Will the bad financial news ever stop? A lot of people in the financial world were hoping for a much better fourth quarter after an absolutely disastrous third quarter. Well, if Monday was any indication, October could end up being a really rough month for global financial markets. So much bad financial news keeps pouring in that it really is a challenge to try to keep track of it all. Greece seems to get closer to defaulting on their debts with each passing day, and it appears that Germany is not going to contribute any more bailout money beyond what they have already committed to. Major banks on both sides of the Atlantic are on the verge of collapse, and investors all over the world are afraid that we may have another "Lehman Brothers moment" soon. Shares of American Airlines dropped a staggering 33 percent on Monday as rumors that they will soon be entering bankruptcy swirled. Yes, things certainly are getting interesting. Back in 2008, the governments of the western world saved the financial system with gigantic bailouts that were absolutely unprecedented. If the financial system crashes again at some point in the coming weeks or months, will the political will for more bank bailouts be there?
