WASHINGTON - You can tell a lawmaker is in a close race when her campaign starts claiming credit for legislation she didn’t write.
That’s what’s happening today with Rep. Shelley Berkley, who is running for Senate against Sen. Dean Heller, as she trots out Mayor Carolyn Goodman and other Las Vegas figures to praise what the campaign is calling her proposed expansion of the visa waiver program.
An expansion of the Visa Waiver Program would make it easier for tourists from more countries to come to the United States.
HMMM...WITH OBAMA LEADING (HA) WE MIGHT SUBSTITUTE U.S.A. FOR GREECE!
Well, it is official. The restructuring deal between Greece and private investors has been pushed through and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association has ruled that this is a credit event which will trigger credit-default swap contracts. The ISDA is saying that there are approximately $3.2 billion in credit-default swap contracts on Greek debt outstanding, and most analysts expect that the global financial system will be able to absorb these losses. But still, 3.2 billion dollars is nothing to scoff at, and some of these financial institutions that wrote a lot of these contracts on Greek debt are going to be hurting. This deal with private investors may have “rescued” Greece for the moment, but the consequences of this deal are going to be felt for years to come. For example, now that Greece has gotten a sweet “haircut” from private investors, politicians in Portugal, Italy, Spain and other European nations are going to wonder why they shouldn’t get some “debt forgiveness” too. Also, private investors are almost certainly going to be less likely to want to loan money to European nations from now on. If they will be required to take a massive haircuts at some point, then why in the world would they want to lend huge amounts of money to European governments at super low interest rates? It simply does not make sense. Now that Greece has defaulted, the whole game is going to change. This is just the beginning.

Book Recommendation. Mohammad & Charlemagne Revisited: The History of a Controversy by Emmet Scott.
Having read and recommended Bryan Ward-Perkins The Fall of Rome, I was most interested to read this book, which takes aim on Ward-Perkins. While I recommend both, this controversial update of Henri Pirenne’s theory that it was the rise of Islam that destroyed classical civilization in Europe is in my view the most important and on the mark. I confess that there were tedious bits for the non-academic at the start, but stay with them, as they are a necessary foundation to the riveting final four chapters, the conclusion and the epilogue, which are must-reads for those who want to understand today’s world and the millennium-old clash between western civilization and Islam. Basically, Scott lays out a solid case that it was the closure of Mediterranean trade route by Muslim raiders, and the destruction of the lowland, coastal agricultural system that supported advanced economies, as the peoples in the south of Europe had to retreat to defended hill top towns to escapes the attentions of Islamic slave raiders that provided the death knell for classical civilization.

No doubt I could come up with a dozen more, none of which have any chance of being passed into effect. What do you think? Mexican hypocrisy over treatment of immigrants

It is telling that writers like Allan Wall and I, who have lived in Latin America and speak Spanish, are the most insistent that the American government's de facto open borders policy toward all and sundry is dangerous and irresponsible. It is in part the intimate knowledge of the double standard that exists in Mexico regarding US immigration policy vs. Mexican immigration policy that troubles Americans with intimate knowledge of, and experience with, Latin America. How about this: The US adopts and enforces the same immigration laws as Mexico and Mexico stops pretending that we are the ones who mistreat immigrants? --Don Hank
