John Adams lost the 1800 presidential election to Thomas Jefferson in large part because Adams, in 1798, pushed through Congress the Alien and Sedition Acts that punished any of the new Americans who stirred up "sedition within the United States" by speech or actions that brought the president or Congress into "contempt or disrepute."

The First Amendment had been ratified only seven years before!

The American people, no longer threatened by the tyrannical British king and insistently proud of their guaranteed personal liberties, voted for Jefferson, who had strongly opposed the Alien and Sedition Acts (my book, "First Freedom: The Tumultuous History of Free Speech in America," Delacorte Press, 1980).

Here we are in 2011, with our federal, state and local governments having the technological ability to track and store in massive databases what we say on the phone, in emails, on Facebook, on Twitter and the myriad other digital means in which we communicate. The Obama administration has the power to punish an American for providing "material support" to our terrorist enemies.

Plans to build a trans-America toll highway between Mexico and Canada through Texas and the middle of America have apparently fallen through because too many people

found out about it too soon and raised all kinds of hell before the necessary tracks of land could be acquired.

Here is another clue that the Left is slowly leaning toward "firing" Obama and promoting candidate Clinton.

Note the repeated comment: "Clinton would never have done this."

Unless I miss my guess, the Clinton camp is setting the stage for a Hillary run, and a lot of Democrats are yearning for just that.

I never pretended to be a prophet, but I can read road signs, and they're springing up like mushrooms after a rain. The say "Clinton in 2012."

We need to be prepared for this because Clinton would be harder to beat than the man more and more people on both sides of the aisle now affectionately call Zero.

New Book: ‘Confidence Men’ Exposes White House Economic Team

The White House is clamoring to shoot down claims made in a new book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Suskind, which offers stinging insight into the Obama administration’s dysfunctional handling of the economic crisis.

Confidence Men, released Tuesday, is an exposé on the bitter rivalries that divided and, at times, paralyzed Obama’s economic team. It paints an unflattering portrait of an inexperienced president who lacks the leadership skills to get his staff in line.

The criticism couldn’t have come at a worse time for Obama. Already under increased scrutiny about the administration’s economic policies and the president’s ability to lead, White House officials are pushing back hard against Suskind’s book. In a media blitz this week, administration officials have listed over a half-dozen minor inconsistencies, factual errors, and spelling mistakes.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner even provided an on-camera denial to one of the book’s more shocking claims, and Press Secretary Jay Carney went so far as to accuse Suskind of “lifting” a passage in his book from Wikipedia.

Oops, Obama touts his jobs plan today at an Ohio bridge that won't qualify

You know all those rusting bridges that President Obama wants to spend billions more dollars repairing to allegedly stimulate the economy?

He's headed out to one today which he's described as a "bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that's on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America." It is on a busy trucking route, spanning the Ohio River between Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati.

It's the Brent Spence Bridge. It doesn't really need repairs. It's got decades of good life left in its steel spans. It's just overloaded. The bridge was built to handle 85,000 cars and trucks a day, which seemed like a lot back during construction in the Nixon era.

Today, the bridge sort of handles more than 150,000 vehicles a day with frequent jam-ups.

So, plans are not to repair or replace the Brent Spence Bridge. But to build another bridge nearby to ease the loads.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s onerous regulations are the bane of many economically important industries such as lumber, oil, energy, manufacturing, paper, and even agriculture. With the current anti-regulatory political climate, an opportunity exists to address the unaccountable EPA’s issuance of rules known as Boiler MACT. Although the EPA itself had already temporarily postponed the implementation of these rules back in May, Rep. H. Morgan Griffith (R-W.V.) introduced in June H.R. 2250, the EPA Regulatory Relief Act, that has received support from 123 cosponsors for a proposal that would make null and void the Boiler MACT rules, as they currently are detailed. A companion bill, S. 1392, was introduced in the Senate on July 20 and already has 29 cosponsors.

MEXICAN NATIONAL SIMPLY HOPPED ON A SCHOOL BUS TO ENTER THE U.S.

Forget climbing fences, burrowing tunnels, or taking a boat to illegally enter the United States – simply hop on a school bus. At least, that’s what an 18-year-old Mexican national did in order to successfully bypass security checkpoints near the Columbus port of entry in southern New Mexico. He was eventually arrested in Deming, NM, after police received a tip about the unauthorized hitchhiker.

The man now faces several immigration violations from the U.S. Border Patrol, including illegal entry and fraudulent use of a document. However, the big unanswered question is why was a school bus belonging to a New Mexico public school district on the Mexican side of the border in the first place?!

Justice Inspector General Cynthia Schnedar failed to even listen to the recordings before handing them over to the actual targets of the investigation and in doing so compromising Congress’ ability to get to the truth and potentially prosecute those responsible for selling thousands of weapons to the Mexican drug cartels.

Most Texas Job Growth Went to Immigrants

81% of Increase 2007-11 Went to New Foreign Workers

WASHINGTON (September 22, 2011) - A new report by the Center for Immigration Studies examines job growth in Texas. Gov. Rick Perry has pointed to increased employment in Texas during the current economic downturn as one of his main accomplishments. Analysis of the Current Population Survey (CPS) collected by the Census Bureau shows immigrants (legal and illegal) have been the primary beneficiaries of this growth since 2007, and not native-born workers. This is true even though the native-born accounted for the vast majority of growth in the working-age population (age 16 to 65) in Texas.

News – first reported by WND – that for the first time a law enforcement official is investigating the document Obama presented as proof of his birthplace has caught fire in the wider press, prompting questions as to whether this effort will get to the bottom of the story.
As WND reported, Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio responded to concerns from tea-party activists in his county by forming a volunteer posse to investigate whether the purported Hawaiian birth certificate Obama released to the public on April 27 is a forgery.

The first post today is on Troy Davis. I want to make clear that I have a lot of friends who oppose the death penalty. They have valid reasons for doing so. But those of my friends who oppose the death penalty have not been out planting or reaping seeds of doubt the Troy Davis defense has, for twenty years, been sowing. For twenty years, for multiple trips to the Supreme Court, and despite all the hollering from the Davis supporters, he has been consistently found guilty.

What is ironic to me is the large number of liberals who think the state should abandon its 5000+ year history and, in this country additionally, its constitutional role in meting out death as the ultimate punishment, but should suddenly embrace as a duty those things the government has no long history or constitutional authority to take on.

Contrary to last night’s “clever” talking point on the left, there is no conflict between a belief in limited government and support for the death penalty. That penalty has long been an explicit power of the state. Troy Davis is dead. May Mark MacPhail, the real victim, rest in peace.
