ONLY 11% RESPOND TO NM DRIVER’S LICENSE VERIFICATION REQUEST   About 1,100 people have set up appointments with the New Mexico motor vehicle office to verify that they are New Mexico residents.  This accounts for 11% of the total 10,000 “foreign nationals” or possibly U.S. Citizens who have obtained a New Mexico driver’s license with identification other than a Social Security number who have been contacted for verification of residency. About 85,000 are listed in the state’s database of “foreign” drivers. New Mexico is one of three states that issues licenses without requiring proof of immigration status. The intent of the law, approved in 2003 when Bill Richardson was governor, was to make it possible for illegal immigrants living in New Mexico to obtain licenses so they could drive to work and buy auto insurance. Current Gov. Susana Martinez said the law has turned New Mexico into a magnet for illegal immigrants from other states and several have been arrested trying to fraudulently obtain driver’s licenses, including people from Mexico, Poland, and China. According to the study, species most at risk include the Arroyo toad (see right), the California red-legged frog, the black-spotted new, the Pacific pond turtle, and the jaguarandi (Puma). The study forgot to include the impact of high-level illegal migration and drug-trafficking on the local wildlife and what implications additional openings or the removal of the fence would have on illegal immigration and the drug trade.
