Herman Cain Wins the Immigration Question at the Republican Presidential Debate
Herman Cain gave the best answer to the immigration question at Thursday's Republican Presidential Debate. Mr. Cain said unequivocally that we must secure the border with "whatever means necessary." And Cain agrees that the states should be allowed to deal with the illegal alien issue...a position recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court regarding Arizona's E-Verify law. He also said what many of us have been saying for years, "enforce the laws that are there."
Newt Gingrich gave the worst answer. Gingrich has always been weak on immigration enforcement and recently told the Spanish language network UNIVISION that he was looking at having "citizen boards" choose which illegal aliens could stay in the country and which would have to go.
Newt Gingrich is way too smart to believe this would work, he was clearly pandering to the Chamber of Commerce and all the other end-users of illegal aliens to get their support. But stop and think about this for a minute. Set up in communities like the Selective Service Draft Boards of WWII era? "Fair, practical and reasonable"? Think about all the corruption, intimidation and legal wrangling this would create. This is just a stupid idea, but does show that Gingrich favors amnesty for illegal aliens, which is why such a ludicrous idea was floated in the first place. Hear him in his own words.
Frontrunner Mitt Romney chose his words carefully and has avoided endorsing any amnesties in the past 5 or 6 years. But he clearly wants more legal immigration (we admit over 1 million legal immigrants a year, currently) and he wants to issue more work visas.
Hell, I support bringing in foreign workers if we need the labor. But, it has never, ever been proven to me that we need foreign workers. There is no labor shortage in America, there is an enormous labor surplus.
Ron Paul swung from one end of the spectrum to the other. On the one hand, pulling U.S. troops off of foreign borders and putting them on our own makes sense. On the other hand, opposing E-Verify and characterizing a simple internet check for eligibility as turning our employers into police was too much. I don't understand the disconnect.
Bachmann, Pawlenty and Santorum weren't asked, which is a shame.
Bottom Line:
The immigration anarchy that our country faces is every bit as important to the future of our country as the debt anarchy.
We need to work to make immigration a campaign issue over the next 15 months.
Republicans need to understand that many Americans didn't vote for John McCain in 2008 because of his support for amnesty for illegal aliens and they best not repeat the mistake of nominating a candidate who supports amnesty in any form.
The majority of American people want the borders secure, interior enforcement and enforcement of our employment laws and no amnesty.
At some point, those who seek power have to understand that in addition to the special interests that want open borders and amnesty, and there is a special interest that wants our laws enforced and our country protected.
And that special interest is The American People.
