NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week, I introduced H.Res. 39. My resolution would express the sense of the House of Representatives that illicit fentanyl-related substances are a Weapon of Mass Destruction and should be classified as such. This will make it easier to police trafficking worldwide and free up additional resources for law enforcement domestically.
Our district lost too many lives to fentanyl-related substance overdoses in 2022. The House must recognize this dangerous drug for what it really is – a Weapon of Mass Destruction. Fentanyl-related substances are tearing families and communities apart, and we must do whatever we can to help law enforcement get them off the streets.
I look forward to introducing and supporting more legislation to help law enforcement and first responders combat this deadly epidemic. Please read about my week below:

A Recap of My Week Meeting with Panama City Officials
I met with the Mayor of Panama City Greg Brudnicki and City Manager Mark McQueen this past week to discuss the city’s growth, priorities for the future, and continued issues with Hurricane Michael recovery.
Later that day, I joined the Mayor of Panama City Beach, Florida State University (FSU), Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH), and the St. Joe Company in celebrating the groundbreaking of the new FSU Health-TMH Medical Campus. The health campus will to complement the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound community. It will start as a medical campus and eventually expand its use to a hospital - covering 320,000 square feet with four medical office buildings and 500 beds.
Joining the Governor in Panama City
Earlier in the week, I joined Governor Ron DeSantis at a press conference where he announced his intent to push the Legislature to make many of his COVID-19 policies permanent. Gov. DeSantis did an exceptional job leading Florida through the pandemic. He received a lot of criticism at the time, but his policies ultimately helped Florida stay open.
My goal in the 118th Congress is to encourage Washington to embrace many of the same common-sense ideas. The Fox News Rundown
I recently joined the Fox News Rundown Podcast to discuss the Pentagon’s consideration of back pay for troops discharged over the now-repealed COVID vaccine mandate. Listen to the interview here. My interview begins at the 23-minute mark.
Updates From Agencies IRS: Tax Filing Season Begins Jan. 23 The IRS recently announced Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, as the beginning of the nation's 2023 tax season, when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2022 tax year returns.
More than 168 million individual tax returns are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the April 18 tax deadline. People have three extra days to file this year due to the calendar.
This year’s due date is April 18, instead of April 15, because of the weekend and the District of Columbia’s Emancipation Day holiday, which falls on Monday, April 17. Read more here.
Be Alert to Fraud After a Disaster
Disaster survivors should be aware that con artists and criminals may try to obtain money or steal personal information through fraud or identity theft after a disaster. In some cases, thieves try to apply for FEMA assistance using names, addresses, and Social Security numbers they have stolen from survivors.
If a FEMA Inspector comes to your home and you did not submit a FEMA application, your information may have been used without your knowledge to create a FEMA application. If so, please inform the inspector that you did not apply for FEMA assistance so they can submit a request to stop further processing of the application.
If you did not apply for assistance but received a letter from FEMA, please call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. The helpline will submit a request to stop any further processing of that application. Read more here.
Thank you for your continued energy and enthusiasm, as reflected in your letters and Facebook posts. If you haven’t already, LIKE my Facebook page. You can also follow me on Twitter @DrNealDunnFL2. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in Congress! Sincerely,

A veteran contacted my office when both of their children’s Chapter 35 benefits, also known as VA education benefits, hadn’t been paid out in months by the Department of Veterans Affairs. We worked with the VA, and the benefits were promptly paid out for both veteran’s children. Do you need help with a federal agency? Contact my office at 850-785-0812 or at www.dunn.house.gov
