On Monday, I joined Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chris Coons (D-DE), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and John Barrasso (R-WY), fellow members of the Senate NATO Observer Group, in sending a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to use this week’s diplomatic talks at the NATO-Russia Council meeting to deter Russian dictator Vladimir Putin from further invading Ukraine and make clear that the U.S. will not accept Putin’s demands to dictate NATO’s decision-making. On Tuesday, I sent a letter to Dr. Janet Woodcock, Acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), regarding the agency’s recent guidance that race and ethnicity should be a primary factor in determining which patients receive life-saving COVID-19 treatments, such as monoclonal antibodies and oral antiviral drugs. On Tuesday, I sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging his administration to support the Colombian government as it seeks to contain and mitigate the destabilizing impact that drug-related conflict has on both Colombia and the Western Hemisphere as a whole. Later that day, I published an op-ed on Medium further explaining why prioritizing the security of Colombia in 2022 is critical to the security of our hemisphere. On Wednesday, I sent a letter to Robin Carnahan, Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), after reports that the Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Finance and Accounting Service, and the Department of the Army purchased products by Lorex, a subsidiary of China-based Dahua Technology, via a GSA portal. Legislation IntroducedOn Monday, I introduced the Keep Kids in School Act of 2022, which would prohibit around $164 billion in unspent COVID-19 relief funding from going to elementary and secondary schools that do not offer in-person instruction on a full-time basis for all enrolled students.
