Dear Friend,

This week, we celebrate the brave men and women who have sacrificed a great deal to protect our nation. It’s only fitting that I share some good news about veterans from the Second Congressional District.

Veterans at local nursing homes received handwritten letters and handmade banners from local students this week. Some of the cards were delivered to Sims State Veterans Nursing Home in Panama City. Sims is one of more than 10 nursing homes in the area that will be getting some of the cards. Robert Ivey, who served in Vietnam and Korea, said the cards are “marvelous." Read more here.

After a rocket blast on Oct. 23, 2004, in Ramadi, Iraq, Brian Sellers was convinced he was paralyzed while lying in a hospital bed in Germany. A helping hand touched Sellers and said, ‘I’m a nurse, everything is going to be OK.” This changed his life, even if he didn’t know it at the time. Brian is now a nurse at Lake City Medical Center. Sellers wants to be there when someone needs him, much like that nurse in Germany was there for him. Read more here.

Willoughby R. Marks American Legion Post 106 took a moment this week to honor its namesake, Lt. Willoughby Marks, at the downtown Apalachicola monument. He was killed in the Argonne in 1918, and the monument was established after World War I in memory of his sacrifice. Members of the post also honored two of their own at the monument, Post Chaplain Charles Scott (WWII) and Oscar Medley (Korean War). Read more here.
