NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week, the House Energy & Commerce Committee met to deliberate over the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion spending package. Don't be fooled by the name "the Build Back Better Act." It should be called the Build More Inflation Act.
This bill was drafted in secret and released to members of the House Energy & Commerce late last week. Additionally, additional substantive changes to the bill were only made public on Sunday – the markup started on Monday morning. This bill will spend TRILLIONS of dollars of taxpayer money in an attempt to drastically change the future of our country.
Over the last year, Americans have seen the value of their savings, and their wages, diminished by inflation. This bill will accelerate this for years to come. My Republican colleagues and I filed multiple amendments to thwart some of the egregious provisions in the spending package, but the Democrat majority voted down absolutely every one of them without exception callously with no intention of working on a compromise. This is no way to run a country – let alone a democracy. I am strongly opposed to the Build More Inflation Act and strongly opposed to a socialist vision for America. Fighting Against the Build More Inflation Act
This past week, the House Energy & Commerce Committee met for three days marking up the Build More Inflation Act — Speaker Pelosi’s grand socialist agenda to destroy freedom and embolden our enemies on the backs of American families. Here are the wins and losses from the markup:
Biggest win -- Speaker Pelosi’s radical price control scheme for prescription drugs failed with a bipartisan vote.
These socialist price controls would lead to less innovation, fewer cures, and no hope for many people who deserve a fighting chance at life. I’m very grateful that many of my colleagues did the right thing and put the wellness of the American people ahead of a socialist agenda.
How Energy & Commerce Democrats voted –
- Against supporting families who have lost loved ones to the opioid and fentanyl epidemics
- Against a moratorium on funding risky research that has the potential to start a pandemic
- For taxpayer dollars to fund abortions
- To raid Medicare
- To discriminate against people with disabilities and pre-existing conditions
- Against lowering diabetic patients’ out-of-pocket costs for insulin
- For fewer cures and treatments for neurodegenerative diseases
In addition, Democrats blocked Republican amendments to protect Medicare Advantage and stop President Joe Biden’s federal mandates that undermine vaccine confidence.
Throughout the markup, Democrats verbally agreed with several of the Republican amendments, but ultimately caved to partisan pressure and voted against our amendments.

Prioritizing Cybersecurity

On Thursday, I had the honor of joining information technology experts in a cybersecurity roundtable discussion focused on our concerns over cyber vulnerabilities, the need for an educated workforce, and inefficiencies with the government funding process. Cybersecurity is one of my top priorities and after the multiple cybersecurity threats we’ve had in the past year, this discussion was timely and necessary. Thank you all for inviting me to join you!

Supporting Bay County Industry

On Friday morning, I joined the Bay County Chamber in celebrating local industry contributions at their Industry Appreciation Awards Breakfast. Throughout the month of September, the Chamber is recognizing companies in Bay County that have made a significant contribution to the economy through expansion, small business, innovation, manufacturing, and business expansion. These people are responsible for the growth we’ve seen in the community, and I’m very grateful for all their hard work.

August 31st may have been the deadline to leave Afghanistan, but our work isn't done.
There are Americans and allies with pending Special Immigration Visas (SIVs) that have not been evacuated yet, and I will continue to work on their behalf.
If you have relatives, colleagues, friends, or loved ones currently in Afghanistan OR if you’re a veteran or service member in contact with an interpreter stuck in the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) process, please reach out to my office so we can try as best as we can to get them to safety.

Coronavirus Updates
Get Vaccinated
Floridians 12 and up are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as prescribed by the Food and Drug Administration. The Pfizer vaccine is authorized for persons age 12 and up. The Moderna vaccine is authorized for persons age 18 and up.
I encourage you to schedule an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine. The State of Florida has partnered with Sharecare to provide an easy-to-use platform that will save your spot for your shot. Schedule your appointment here. Florida has many sites providing the COVID-19 vaccine. Use the vaccine finder to find a site near you. Supplies are limited and appointments may be required.
Monoclonal antibody treatments
Early monoclonal antibody treatment saves lives. Antibodies help the immune system recognize and respond effectively to the virus. According to the treatment guidelines, monoclonal antibody therapy should be administered as soon as possible after diagnosis. Referrals are not required at any of the State of Florida monoclonal antibody treatment sites and treatment is available at no cost to patients.
