NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This past week, we were called back to Washington not to address matters pertinent to American interests, but to vote on an outrageous liberal wish list. Don’t be fooled by this socialist Trojan horse -- this bill is not about roads and bridges. This bill will increase taxes, increase inflation, weaken our military budget, and provide amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. It also paves the way for an additional $17 trillion in debt over the next 10 years. This is not in our district’s best interest, nor America’s best interest. You can read more about this spending spree below.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan is in disarray and the situation in Kabul grows more dangerous by the day. On Thursday, we lost thirteen members of the U.S. Armed Forces and several civilians in an attack at the Kabul airport. My heart breaks for the families shattered by this act of pure evil.

The bombings that occurred in Afghanistan could have been prevented and are a direct result of the Biden Administration’s failed leadership. President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan is unquestionably inspiring new terrorist attacks, and he has no one to blame but himself. It’s time for President Biden to pull his head out of the sand and take action. Our troops and our allies deserve better than this.

What’s Happening on Capitol Hill
Another Democrat Spending Spree

On Tuesday, the House passed the framework/blueprint for yet another outrageous spending bill – this time totaling $3.5 trillion. This bill is nothing more than a trojan horse packed full of socialist wish list items.  Once again, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats are more focused on fulfilling their radical liberal agenda than helping the American people.

H. Res. 601 passed in the House 220-212. The package provides the following:

  • Raises the corporate tax rate and taxes on small businesses and family farms.
  • Raises taxes and costs on American families earning under $400,000.
  • Imposes price controls on the cost of prescription drugs, which would limit seniors’ access to medicines and drastically harm pharmaceutical innovation, resulting in fewer drugs being developed.
  • Pushes American jobs overseas and rewards China by taxing U.S. employers at one of the highest rates in the world.
  • Provides amnesty to illegal immigrants.
  • Eliminates "right to work" protections.
  • Drops military funding to the lowest levels in over 80 years.
  • Massively expands Obamacare and includes new subsidies, regardless of income.

Child Tax Credit Information

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is delivering monthly Advance Child Tax Credit payments to about 35 million families based on tax returns filed for 2020 and 2019.

Low-income families who were not required to file a tax return for 2020 or 2019 can sign up for the advance payments if they’re eligible. To determine their eligibility people can use the IRS’s Eligibility Assistant.

If eligible, low-income people can sign up for the Advance Child Tax Credit Payments, and get any Economic Impact Payments they were eligible for and haven’t received, using the IRS’s Non-Filer Sign Up Tool.

More information on helping eligible low-income non-filers get the Advance Child Tax Credit payments is available here.

Additionally, the IRS has added an address update feature on the Adv. Child Tax Credit Update Portal. This will help families receive their payment by paper check avoid mailing delays or having a payment returned by USPS as undeliverable.

To have the change take effect in September, people need to complete a request in the CTC Update Portal before midnight Eastern Time on Monday, Aug. 30. Families can still make changes after that date, but their request will not be effective until the next scheduled monthly payment in October.

Constituent Casework Corner

A veteran contacted my office when they could not get a copy of their DD-214, Discharge Papers and Separation Documents, from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) to renew their expired driver’s license. We were able to work with NPRC to have the veteran’s request expedited and their DD-214 to them within a couple weeks.
