It’s no secret that the planet’s honeybees are in grave danger. Yet, the very chemicals that are tied to pollinators’ dwindling populations are still on the market and being used on crops every day. Neonicotinoids – insecticides related to the chemical nicotine – are used as seed treatments and can remain within a plant’s nectar and pollen, which pollinators then take back to their colonies. Once spread throughout, the chemicals can affect memory, colony growth, foraging efficiency and other survival factors. While losing crops to pest insects is not ideal, we simply cannot afford to kill off any more bees. Humans have already done irreversible damage, and we need pollinators in order to survive. We cannot wait another season to ban neonicotinoids and other harmful insecticides. Sign our petition and demand the EPA outlaw them before it’s too late. |
