FLORIDA - SENATOR RICK SCOTT CONTINUES TO PROTECT US!

In Case You Missed It!

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott Fighting to Protect Taxpayer Dollars from Bailing out Wasteful States

Image

As Congress considers additional coronavirus relief measures, Senator Rick Scott continues to reject any proposal to bail out wasteful states, like New York and California, that want to use taxpayer money intended for coronavirus response to backfill their poorly-managed budgets and pension plans.

Senator Rick Scott supports another relief measure to help our small businesses and individuals that are hurting because of the coronavirus. Senate Republicans have been trying to pass targeted relief measure for months, but unfortunately, Democrats have continued to block any efforts that don’t fund their liberal states and priorities.

Senator Scott has reached out to every single Governor, twice now, to learn exactly how they have spent the hundreds of billions of dollars they’ve already received to address this crisis, and only ten have replied. Under no circumstance should state and local governments receive additional taxpayer dollars without telling the American people how they’ve spent money already received, and under no circumstance should American taxpayers be responsible for the excesses of wasteful states like New York and California.

As your United States Senator, Senator Scott will continue to fight to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely, and that any funding intended for coronavirus relief goes directly to Americans and small businesses in need.

Sen. Rick Scott on the Senate Floor: Big States don’t need Bailouts, they want Bailouts to Backfill Longstanding Budget Problems

On December 9, Senator Rick Scott spoke on the U.S Senate Floor about his fight to make sure Washington passes a COVID relief bill that helps Americans and small businesses in need, instead of bailing out liberal politicians who can’t live within their means.

Sen. Rick Scott: I’m Fighting Any Attempt for Taxpayers to Bail Out States

On December 4, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after sending a letter, co-signed by Senator Ron Johnson, to U.S. Governors asking for more information about how they have allocated the $150 billion in taxpayer money from the CARES Act and other federal coronavirus response measures. In June, Senator Scott wrote a letter to the Governors about the use of these funds, and only 10 states responded.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Today, I’m reaching out to every Governor again so they can tell us exactly how they’ve used the $150 billion in taxpayer money already given them to respond to the coronavirus. Under no circumstance should state and local governments receive additional taxpayer dollars without telling us how they’ve spent this money, and under no circumstance should American taxpayers be responsible for the excesses of wasteful states like New York and California. We’re seeing data now that clearly shows state and local governments’ projected revenue shortfalls from the coronavirus didn’t happen. We also know that the states that have opened their economies and focused on getting Americans back to work are showing promising unemployment numbers compared to liberal states like California and New York, which continue to impose restrictions on their economies."

Sen. Rick Scott: Congress Should Once Again Reject Bailouts for Mismanaged States

On December 1, as Congress considers additional coronavirus relief measures, Senator Rick Scott released the following statement rejecting bailouts for liberal states that want to use taxpayer money intended for coronavirus response to backfill their poorly-managed budgets and pension plans.

Senator Rick Scott said, “I’m very disappointed that a proposal from some of my colleagues today apparently includes provisions that spends hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer money to bail out wasteful states when we don’t even know how much is still unspent from the previous coronavirus response packages that Congress passed earlier this year. I’ve reached out to every Governor to learn exactly how this money has been spent, and most have refused to give us any information. It’s time we get serious about where taxpayer money is going, and reject unnecessary state bailouts.

"The liberal Governors who refuse to open their states or spend taxpayer money wisely are seeing high numbers of unemployment. But what they don’t want you to know is that state and local governments’ projected revenue shortfalls due to the coronavirus have not come to fruition – which is a great thing. Revenue collections in many states exceeded their initial projections, and most states will be in a strong position to get through this pandemic without more federal aid. Again, that’s great news for our country."

Sen. Rick Scott Statement on Senate Democrats Blocking Debate on Targeted COVID-19 Relief Bill

On September 10, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement following Senate Democrats’ decision to block the COVID-19 relief package, which provides targeted support to individuals and businesses struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Senate Republicans have been focused on getting help to individuals and small businesses that are struggling. We can accomplish this goal without bankrupting our country. The package negotiated and supported by Senate Republicans does just that. I worked hard to make sure the bill gets help to those who need it, while maintaining a fiscally responsible path. In particular, the bill repurposes hundreds of billions of dollars of unspent money from the CARES Act and makes sure we don’t use Florida taxpayer dollars to bail out fiscally irresponsible states like New York, California and Illinois.

"Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked even consideration of this bill. Their strategy is clear. They believe that passing nothing benefits them politically and they’re determined to stop any relief from moving forward. It’s shameful, but what we’ve come to expect from Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi.”

Sen. Rick Scott on Fox Business: We Need to Get Aid to Americans in Need, Not Waste Taxpayer Dollars on Poorly-Managed States

On December 8, Senator Rick Scott joined David Asman on Fox Business to discuss how Democrats are playing politics with coronavirus relief and delaying aid to workers, small businesses and vaccine research and distribution unless they get hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out liberal politicians who can’t manage their own budgets.

Sen. Scott, Hispanic leader Garza in Orlando Sentinel: Reject COVID-19 bailouts

On September 30, Senator Rick Scott wrote in the Orlando Sentinel, “As America continues to work to reopen the economy and end the coronavirus, Congress must focus on three things to help us recover stronger: suppressing the pandemic, getting people back to work safely, and preparing for the next potential crisis.

Unfortunately, many lawmakers are trying to use this crisis to push their irresponsible spending priorities that have nothing to do with the coronavirus, including a massive taxpayer bailout of poorly managed states. Just last week, a minority of the Senate blocked a $650 billion coronavirus relief bill because it failed to include trillions for state and local bailouts

That’s not fair to states like Florida, where we’ve made the tough choices to put our state on a financially secure path. Bailing out the bad budgets and pension plans of poorly run states would impose a huge burden on Florida taxpayers, and do severe damage to our economic recovery. We have worked too hard to give every family in Florida a chance to live their American dream and should not be bailing out states that have been fiscally irresponsible for decades.”

...At some point, Congress needs to get serious about the impact of this spending and start getting a return on taxpayer dollars. Congress should be focused on policies that bolster the economy and create a strong fiscal foundation where individuals and small businesses can thrive.
