Chinese factory caught recycling used nappies to make new ones
Machines were ripping cotton from the used nappies to manufacture new nappies.
Disgusting scenes and horrible stenches have given away a Chinese factory’s illegal practice of recycling used nappies to make new ones.
The secret factory located in Linyi City, in China’s eastern Shandong Province, was uncovered in a joint investigation by health care, business and quality control authorities on Wednesday.
The gross and unethical practice was discovered on Consumer Rights Day, an annual event in China.
Used nappies were found all over the floor
Quality control bodies worked with health care providers and businesses to track down the illicit operation to a 400 square metre building.
Inside machines were ripping cotton from the used nappies to manufacture new nappies.
Chinese media reported disgusting scenes in the factory, with stacks of used adult nappies giving off a horrendous stench. There were also bits of nappy all over the floor, adding to the smell.
An investigation into the discovery is ongoing and it has not been reported whether any arrests were made or what charges the factory’s bosses might face.
China factories used condoms as hair bands
The discovery has again put business ethics in China into question after other horrifying examples of illegal recycling were revealed in recent years.
In 2007, a Chinese manufacturer was found to be recycling used condoms and turning them into hair bands. Last year plastic pellets discarded as part of medical waste were recycled into children’s toys and plates.
Where are your nappies from?
Here in Australia, nappies are manufactured both locally and overseas, with a few produced in China.
Bambooty, a night cloth nappy is made “ethically in China by a family owned manufacturing business”, while Ecorignals are designed in Australia and manufactured in China in a certified factory.
Thank You nappies are also manufactured in China – "in high quality factories that abide by ethical work and sourcing standards". Funds from the nappies also help establish child and maternal health programs for families in need.
Woolworths homebrand nappies, Our Little Ones, are manufactured in Thailand and China. A spokesman said its manufacturers had been "extensively audited and checked to ensure that the Little Ones products meet our stringent quality standards".
Coles’ Comfy Bots nappies are manufactured both locally and overseas. After a relaunch last year, its Crawler, Toddler and Walker unisex nappies are now being made in Australia not Thailand as they were previously.
BabyLove nappies sold in Coles and Woolworths are made in Thailand.
An Aldi spokesman said half its popular Mamia nappies are made in Australia, the other half in Germany and Belgium.
While family favorite Huggies is designed and made completely in Australia.
