NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT Dear Friend, Last week, I traveled back to Washington, D.C. to vote in favor of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. Speaker Pelosi played partisan politics and delayed the vote on this critical of piece of legislation. My colleagues and I were ready to return and pass this bill which provides emergency funding for our small businesses and additional funding for hospitals. I spoke with local news about this bill and also hosted a Telephone Townhall where I heard from many of our district's small business owners about the hardships they are facing. I am happy to share that the Congressional Art Competition is in full swing for high school students and we look forward to submissions from our talented artists. Please read about my week below: Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act After the CARES Act passed and small businesses applied for the SBA's Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), we learned that the funds would be exhausted and more would be needed for small businesses to continue operating. Last week, the House passed the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act and President Trump signed the bill into law shortly thereafter. The first rollout of the PPP saved 30 million jobs. The funds from this bill are expected to save an additional 27.8 million jobs, over a million of which will be saved in the state of Florida. Our small business owners and their employees are hurting, and the additional funding provided by the PPP will help them tremendously. This bill also provides the additional funding needed for healthcare providers to continue administering care and test more of our family, friends and neighbors for COVID-19.  Click here for a quick video explaining why I supported the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. Small Business Telephone Townhall  Last Wednesday, I hosted a telephone townhall to discuss issues our small business owners are facing. I emphasized the following points: • In one week alone, banks issued a total 349 billion dollars of   loans through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). • PPP loans are forgivable for payroll, utilizes, rent or mortgage   with documentation from your bank. • The Treasury Department is continually modifying their    Frequently Asked Questions page so that we have the most   updated information. Click here and scroll down to "Tools" to   visit that page. After hearing from constituents, it is clear that many of you have submitted PPP applications, but are unsure as to whether they were accepted. I urge you to contact your bank to verify that your application is still in the queue as banks prepare to issue additional loans with the passage of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. Provisions in the CARES Act also grant important tax relief for employers. You may be eligible to defer certain payroll taxes, take advantage of expanded business interest deductions and other forms of relief. Congressional Art Competition The 2020 Congressional Art Competition is officially underway for high school students in the Second Congressional District of Florida. The United States House of Representatives sponsors this competition each spring to recognize and honor talented young artists from each congressional district across the country. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 and since then over 650,000 young artists have been involved. This is an outstanding opportunity for students to get creative despite the challenges presented with the Coronavirus. This year, art submissions will be received electronically. The winner’s art piece will eventually be shipped to my Washington, DC office and put on display for one year in the United States Capitol building along with artwork from across the country.
