NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT
Dear Friend,Last week, the Senate voted to acquit President Trump of the two articles of impeachment and we heard the President highlight the many successes our nation has seen under his leadership during his State of the Union Address. I also met with General James Holmes to discuss the rebuilding of Tyndall Air Force Base and the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act passed the House. Please read about my week below:State of the UnionOn Tuesday, President Trump gave his third State of the Union Address to a Joint Session of Congress. President Trump painted a picture of hope and prosperity as he laid out his vision for the future of our great country. Over the last three years our country has experienced unprecedented economic growth and strengthened our once depleted military. American workers are thriving because of the policies put into place by the president. Despite Democrats’ efforts to block President Trump at all turns, American optimism is at an all-time high. It’s clear that under his leadership the “Great American Comeback” is in full swing. Americans across the country in every income group are seeing the highest wages and salaries in decades and more than 7.3 million jobs were created in the last three years. I am committed to working with President Trump and his administration to keep this momentum going.Meeting with General Mike Holmes Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of meeting with General Mike Holmes, Commander of Air Combat Command at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia. General Holmes and I discussed maintaining force readiness, future funding challenges, the success of the continued rebuild of Tyndall Air Force Base, as well as the F-35 mission at Tyndall. I look forward to continuing these conversations and I remain encouraged by all of the progress being made at Tyndall AFB. Thank you, General Holmes, for your work, leadership, and dedication to ensuring the strength and readiness of our nation's Air Force bases.
Impeachment Update Last week, the Senate voted to acquit President Trump of both articles of impeachment. The vote in the Senate exonerated President Trump and sent a clear message to House Democrats that they’ve wasted Congress’ time and the time of the American people who have been fed up with this never-ending partisan witch-hunt. While the impeachment charade is finally over, I know that the Trump-hating liberals in Washington won’t stop trying to steal the election they lost in 2016.
I came to Washington to work for my nation and leave it a better place for my grandchildren. Democrats have had a different agenda and I believe voters across the country will remember that when they head to the ballot box in November.
House Democrats also refused to allow a vote to condemn Speaker Pelosi’s actions during President Trump’s State of the Union Address. President Trump recognized General Charles McGee, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen; Kayla Mueller, a humanitarian aid worker who was killed by ISIS; Army Staff Sergeant Christopher Hake, who was killed serving our country in Iraq; and Sergeant First Class Townsend Williams, who had just returned from fighting for our country in the Middle East. Speaker Pelosi chose to rip up President Trump’s speech instead of honoring America’s heroes.
PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act Last week, the House passed the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veterans Therapy Act. The PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act would establish a pilot program at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide veterans coping with post-traumatic stress (PTS) work therapy by learning the art and science of training dogs for service. Many of our servicemembers return from war with invisible scars which cannot simply be healed with a trip to the doctor. With the spotlight on veterans’ suicide, we should be doing everything in our powers to support our veterans’ mental health. The PAWS Act passed in the House last week and is important legislation that helps veterans address their stress with the assistance of service dogs. I urge the Senate to immediately take up this legislation and get the PAWS Act across the finish line.

I enjoyed a great conversation with constituents from Tallahassee representing the Florida Rural Water Association last week.

While waiting for their Medicare Provider ID, a doctor started treating patients following Hurricane Michael because of the extremely high demand for medical treatment. After the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) denied all claims submitted prior to them issuing his ID three weeks after the storm, the doctor called my office. We were able to work with CMS to have them recognize the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Hurricane Michael and they back dated the doctor’s effective date allowing them to resubmit the claims for processing.
