Border Patrol Agents Arrest Subject with Active Interpol Warrant
SAN DIEGO —On Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, U.S. Border Patrol agents working near the U.S./Mexico International Border arrested a man who had an active Interpol warrant for sexual abuse of a child and rape.
At approximately 7 p.m., agents responded to illicit cross-border activity near Dulzura, Calif. After following footprints for several hundred yards, agents discovered five men walking north. The men ran from the agents, but after a brief search and assistance from an infrared scope operator, all five subjects were apprehended approximately 3 miles north of the U.S./Mexico border. All five men were determined to be illegally present in the United States.
The five subjects were then transported to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing. At the station, record checks revealed that one of the men, a 36-year-old Guatemalan National, had an active Interpol warrant from the country of Finland for sexual abuse of a child and rape.
The man is being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending prosecution for 8 U.S.C. 1325 (Improper Entry by Alien), and is awaiting possible extradition by the Ministry of Justice in Finland.
To prevent the illicit smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband, the U.S. Border Patrol maintains a high level of vigilance on major corridors of egress away from our Nation’s borders. To report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol, contact San Diego Sector at (619) 498-9900.
