Conservative Groups Rally Behind Potential Jim Jordan Speaker Bid |
via Roll Call ‘I think the path to victory is making this a campaign issue,’ FreedomWorks’ Noah Wall says House Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan may not be ready to announce a bid to be the next speaker, but several grass-roots conservative groups have begun campaigning on his behalf. The Ohio Republican has said he would consider running for speaker when there’s a race. Speaker Paul D. Ryan is planning to serve through the remainder of his term and then retire. And a Republican speaker’s race won’t happen if the party doesn’t hold on to their House majority in the midterms. A Jordan speaker candidacy would be a foil to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has support from Ryan and the current GOP leadership team. READ MORE HERE |
6 In 10 Able-Bodied SNAP Recipients Don't Work At All. That Has to Change. |
via The Federalist Despite near-record low unemployment and a record number of open jobs, the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps remains at a near-record 21 million. President Trump has quietly fired the starting gun for a race toward another round of welfare reform by signing Executive Order 13828, which directs his agencies to take a deep dive toward reforming and streamlining welfare programs. The key goals: move more able-bodied adults from welfare to work, crack down on welfare fraud, and preserve resources for the truly needy. It is a far reaching order and much needed. But the executive order is just one vehicle for reform. READ MORE HERE |

White House Looking to Roll Back $25 Billion from Massive Spending Bill. But Will It Happen? |
via The Daily Caller President Donald Trump’s administration is going to roll out a recision package in the coming weeks that will roll back $25 billion from the $1.3 trillion spending bill Congress passed in April, a source with first-hand knowledge told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “I will never sign another bill like this again. I’m not going to do it again. Nobody read it. It’s only hours old. Some people don’t even know what is in it. $1.3 trillion dollars–it is the second largest ever,” the president said in late March when he signed the Republicans’ spending bill. The White House was expected to release a recision package — a request to rescind funds Congress previously appropriated — Tuesday, but that did not materialize. The administration was reportedly looking at rolling back between $30 and $60 billion from the $1.3 trillion spending bill. READ MORE HERE |

Don't Fetishize Labor For Its Own Sake |
via National Review The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits is reaching record lows, yet Senator Bernie Sanders has announced a plan to provide a government job to any American “who wants or needs one.” The plan would necessitate grievous tax hikes, but even if it were somehow economically feasible, we should still oppose it. The notion of a right to a taxpayer-funded job that is neither necessary to the function of government nor warranted by market demand is rooted in an illiberal philosophy that fetishizes labor for its own sake. In the radical dawn of the 19th century, this belief in a right to a job was contrived by the French utopian Charles Fourier, who stated that “the first right of men is the right to work.” Promptly, the concept was popularized by the socialist politician Louis Blanc, who heralded it as a solution to the rising unemployment caused by the financial crisis preceding the French Revolution of 1848. Across the Atlantic, Horace Greeley, the founding editor of the New York Tribune, echoed Blanc and called for a right to “constant Employment with a just and full recompense.” Nearly a century later, during the Great Depression, the Louisiana demagogue Huey Long sustained that clarion call and added that incomes above a certain threshold should be grazed to fund the policy’s enactment. In due time, figures such as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr. lent their voices to the cause. READ MORE HERE |
Energy Department Petitioned To Stop Making Dishwashers Even Crappier |
via The Daily Caller A conservative think tank is petitioning the Department of Energy (DOE) to adopt a new energy efficiency standard for dishwashers that can cycle in an hour or less. The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) sent a petition to the DOE Wednesday, pointing out an unintended consequence of increasingly strict standards on energy and water standards: dishwasher cycle time. “It used to take you only an hour to get a full load of dishes washed and dried in your dishwasher. Today, thanks to federal energy efficiency standards, the average time is nearly 2.5 hours,” CEI General Counsel Sam Kazman said in a statement. “That’s not progress; it’s bureaucracy. And for many consumers, it’s a royal pain. We hope the Department of Energy will change course.” READ MORE HERE |
