As Nevada’s students prepare to go back to school, I want to tell you about some of the education initiatives I’ve been working on for our families. This week, I hosted an education roundtable with students, educators and community leaders in the public and private sectors to discuss my Extra Credit for Working Students Act of 2016 and how it will benefit students through tax credits.
I’ve hosted educational events like Aerospace Day to inform our students about the opportunities they have through STEM education and have visited schools throughout the Fourth District to hear from students. My office has also hosted several workshops at various high schools to help our students better understand the process of applying for federal student aid. Keep reading below to learn more about what I’ve been working on for Nevadans.

| Extra Credit for Working Students |
I introduced the Extra Credit for Working Students Act to provide a flexible, accelerated tax credit for working students. This bill would provide students with a choice to receive a $5,000 tax credit for each of their first two years of post-secondary education, for a total of $10,000 – which is the average cost of attendance for two years of community college. I believe that if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and work your way through school, you deserve to keep more of your hard-earned income. Earlier this week, at the College of Southern Nevada, I was joined by President Richards for a meeting with students, educators, government representatives and business leaders to discuss ways this bill will help Nevada’s students. It’s always great to hear from our community and work together to help our students succeed. |
| Advancing STEM Education |
Nevadans can be proud of having incredibly bright students and dedicated educators that help our students reach their full potential in innovative ways. Earlier this month, I hosted Aerospace Day to encourage our students to learn more about the exciting opportunities they have through STEM education. It is thanks to Reza Karamooz, President of Nevada Business Aviation Association (NVBAA), Sunrise Mountain High School, Rancho High School, Skybot and several other aerospace organizations that this event was a success. I also want to give a special thank you to Principal Deanna Jaskolski of Bridger Middle School for allowing us to host Aerospace Day at their school. There were also premier STEM programs, such as the NVBAA, Global Robot And Drone Deployment (GRADD) and Aviation Post 888 that have served to further science and exploration in our schools and communities. Nevada families were able to stop by their booths to get information about their aviation, aerospace and robotics programs. Thank you to all for your work hard in helping to grow these rising industries in our great state. |
| Spending Time with Our Future Leaders |
Since I took office, I’ve visited with countless students throughout the Fourth District to talk to them about what it’s like to be a member of Congress and answer their questions and concerns about our political process. I am always impressed by the students I meet and appreciate hearing from them on the issues they face as students of our great state. I look forward to visiting with more of our future leaders during the upcoming school year. |

I’ve meet with hundreds of talented high school students in our state and know they are more than capable of accomplishing great things. I encourage and welcome students to put their coding and programing skills to the test and enter the 2016 Congressional App Challenge. This challenge is open to students living in Nevada’s Fourth District. This contest is intended to create an interest in the STEM fields and have fun while learning.
