A child suicide bomber killed at least 51 people and wounded nearly 70 others at the Kurdish wedding late Saturday in Gaziantep on the border with Syria — the deadliest attack in Turkey this year. “I was rushing toward the building when an explosion occurred inside. ... Iraq executes 36 men convicted in Islamic State massacre

Iraq has hanged 36 Islamic State militants convicted of involvement in the June 2014 massacre of hundreds of Iraqi military recruits near Tikrit, government officials said. The victims, among thousands of unarmed Air Force recruits at Camp Speicher military base, were Shiites and non-Muslims who were tied up and driven from the camp. They were taken to multiple locations and shot, and their bodies were dumped in trenches or rivers. Sunnis apparently were spared. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack and released video of some killings. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pledged to step up the execution of condemned militants after a bomb blast in Baghdad last month killed more than 300 people. [...]

Child's face shows horror of ceaseless war in Syria. The older brother of a Syrian boy whose dazed and bloodied face stunned the world has died from wounds sustained in the same bombardment that injured his sibling, observers said Saturday. Reuters, citing the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported that 10-year-old Ali Daqneesh suffered from internal bleeding and organ damage after Wednesday's airstrike in the city of Aleppo. Ali's five-year-old brother, Omran Daqneesh. was rescued from the rubble of a missile-struck building. A photo of him sitting alone in an ambulance, confused and covered in debris and blood, has become the haunting image of the unforgiving struggle for the city. In August, the International Committee for the Red Cross called the battle for Aleppo "one of the most devastating conflicts in modern times." The Observatory says that fighting and airstrikes in and around Aleppo has killed 448 civilians so far this month, according to Reuters. The airstrikes have largely targeted the east of the city, which is held by rebels who have been fighting since 2011 to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. [...]
