1. FreedomWorks to Obama: No Lame-Duck Supreme Court Nominee
Following President Obama’s announcement that he intends to nominate a
candidate to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant after the passing
of Justice Antonin Scalia, FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:
“We had hoped there would be at least one day of mourning after the
loss of a legal giant and conservative hero. Unfortunately, President
Obama and Senate Democrats are already politicizing this sad day by
pledging to take quick action to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme
Court.”
“If President Obama believes he can appoint a liberal to this seat on
the Court without a fight from conservative grassroots activists, he is
sorely mistaken. An appointment of this magnitude is too important to
be left to a lame-duck president, which is why Senate Majority Leader
McConnell and Judiciary Committee Chairman Grassley poured cold water on
President Obama’s plans.” Read more

3. Progressives' Budget to Nowhere - by FreedomWorks' Senior Economic Contributor Stephen More via The Washington Times
Barack Obama’s latest and last budget is nothing if not is a
grandiose visionary document. No one — least of all Congress — paid much
attention to it, because no one cares where this lamest of duck
presidents wants the country to go fiscally. After $8 trillion of new
debt added, he’s done enough trouble to our nation’s finances already.
But the $4.1 trillion Obama manifesto deserves some inspection if
only because it is crammed with so many god-awful ideas. Americans
should be very clear about what the progressive left wants to do next if
they retain power in the November elections and Mr. Obama has proudly
shown his hand. Read more here...
4. Nebraska is Making Crucial Moves for Asset Forfeiture Reform - by Joseph Donoso
Many states are awakening to infringements on liberty being committed
through civil asset forfeiture, and Nebraska could become the latest to
protect the rights of its citizens.
State Senator Tommy Garrett has introduced Legislative Bill 1106 to
safeguard innocent people from illegal seizures and to guarantee that
local law enforcement agencies respect constitutional rights when
addressing crime. In his statement of intent,
Senator Garrett noted that the bill will ensure the asset forfeiture is
“limited to cases where the property owner has been convicted of one of
the eligible crimes”. This, along with several other measures, makes
Garrett’s bill a strong step in the right direction. Read more here...
5. FreedomWorks Foundation Mourns Loss of Justice Antonin Scalia
Following news of the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin
Scalia, FreedomWorks Foundation Executive Director Curt Levey commented:
“Justice Scalia will be remembered as one of the most influential
Supreme Court justices in the history of the court. He used his enormous
intellect and untiring devotion to objective, text-based interpretation
of the Constitution to uphold the rule of law. He did more than anyone
else to turn the tide against the decades of judicial activism that
peaked in the 1960's and 1970's. Today, we mourn Justice Scalia's death,
celebrate his life, and honor his love of country.”
“The president and Senate owe it to this great man to replace him
with someone who shares his principled, non-activist approach to the law
and, ideally, is chosen after the American people have a chance to
speak this November. Nominating a controversial replacement for Scalia
in the middle of a heated presidential election would ensure a
confirmation fight more politicized than this nation has ever seen. That
would hardly be a fitting tribute to a man who devoted his legal career
to the principle that judges should interpret the law objectively
rather than politically.” Read more here...
