Friends,
Over the
last few months there has been a lot of focus on
the negative outcomes from the 78 session, mainly Governor Brian
Sandoval’s tax hike that was passed without any consideration for
Nevadans or
Nevada business owners. While the elected officials who stabbed
constituents in
the back by passing this tax package, which was overwhelmingly opposed by
voters, deserve to be reprimanded, today I would like to shift the focus
and highlight
some of the great things that have come from this past session and how they
are
now paving the way for a better Nevada.
First, a
huge win this session was the repeal of blue cards
for gun owners in Clark County. My friends at the Nevada Firearms
Coalition,
the National Rifle Association and the New Frontier Armory held a great
event
last month; residents came from all over Clark County to shred their blue
cards
in celebration of this long needed repeal. When we create more hoops for
gun
owners to jump through, like blue card registration forms, we are only
discouraging good citizens from being able to protect themselves. This
repeal
is a step in the right direction for gun owners and non-gun owners alike in
Nevada. An armed society is a safe and polite society.
Also, Nevada
has become a leader in education since
establishing the Education Savings Accounts program. This program allows
any
child who has spent at least 100 days in public school to receive between
$5,100 and $5,700 per year. Families can use this money towards tutoring,
private school tuition, charter school fees, textbooks and many other
school-related expenses. I would like to encourage all families to take a
look
at their children’s current school situation, and question if they
are in the
best place for them. With this new program, Nevadans are encouraged to take
control of their children’s education to ensure that their needs are
being met.
Last, but
certainly not least, Nevada has FINALLY opened
it’s first medical marijuana dispensary. It was 15 years ago that
Nevadans
voted to legalize medical marijuana, and now we can finally see the
positive
benefits that this industry will bring to our state. Located in Sparks,
Silver
State Relief will be able to help Nevadans with a variety of illnesses. In
addition to being a great resource for citizens, the cannabis industry has
the
potential to have a positive influence on Nevada’s economy.
Looking
forward, constituents need to be sure that they are
electing officials whose sole objective is to stand up for Nevadans. We
cannot
afford to have a repeat of the last session where so many of our
representatives chose to turn their backs on voters by forgoing their
running
values to serve their own interests. If you are upset with the officials
that
have been elected do not give up your right to vote, instead become an
active
part of the solution and vote for the person you believe is a better fit.
If
you do not vote you are not rebelling, you are surrendering!
Mark your
calendars because this month there are a couple of
great events happening that you won’t want to miss out on. First, on
August 22,
the Active Republican Women are hosting “Hot August Nights”.
This will be a
great evening full of food, fun and fabulous conversations.
