Black man arrested for posting KKK hate signs outside black church
by NWV Senior Political News Writer, Jim Kouri

At a time when the nation is still reeling from the racially-motivated attack on a black church in South Carolina that left nine churchgoers, including their pastor, dead, a black male suspect, http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/jul/2/black-man-admits-to-posting-threatening-signs-outs/ who tried to pass off his racist threats as being made by a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was arrested by Colorado Springs, Colorado, police officers on Tuesday. The 44-year old man is being held for posting the offensive signs at a predominately black church, according to law enforcement. Vincent Broughton, a resident of Colorado Springs, is accused of posting signs near a church at the 200 block of East Platte Avenue, according to a police statement on Tuesday. One of the signs read: [sic]"HELP This church identified 6 Devils for the K.K.K The Police." The homemade signs appeared on three consecutive Sundays outside the New Covenant Church, a Pentecostal Christian denominational church. The congregation's pastor, Rev. Roland Joyner, http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/07/01/racist-signs-posted-at-black-church-had-congregants-on-edge-many-were-surely-stunned-to-see-suspects-face/ told police that he believed the signs were hung up outside of his church during the Sunday afternoon service. He told police that one of the signs said "Black men be aware, you are the target." A woman, Holly Garvin, who lived in the neighborhood close to the church but was not a member of the congregation, said that she replaced the racist messages with positive, Christian signs such as: "no more violence" and "God loves us all." When the racist signs were first discovered posted outside of New Covenant Church, Pastor Joyner told reporters that out of fear for the safety of his "flock" he locked the doors while the churchgoers were inside worshiping. "While this incident doesn't rise to the severity of the South Carolina black church slaughter by a white racist suspect, it nonetheless caused great concern to the Christians in Colorado Springs as well as to the police department," said Ronald Faisel, a former New York State police officer and member of the religious organization Cops for Christ. Broughton was taken into custody by police without incident on Tuesday after he was a suspect in the posting of more signs in the Colorado Springs downtown area, according to reports. http://www.krdo.com/news/man-admits-to-posting-hate-signs-around-town/33843518 police said. "I did it. Probably about 100 or so, I'd come downtown everyday and put up the posters." said Broughton. "I want people to know how corrupt these people that run the town are, the police department, city council and people in the community," said Broughton. However, he didn't mention why he wished the pastor and the churchgoers to think the Ku Klux Klan was responsible for the hateful messages. The suspected KKK impersonator is charged with perpetrating a biased-motivated crime, disorderly conduct, harassment, and littering, according to the police. He was served with a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) to appear in court and released, police said. According to former New York police detectives Samuel Washington and Peter Hernandez, the suspect may have wish to create conflict between whites and blacks in the community. In the case that has caused so much concern throughout the nation, http://www.abc15.com/news/national/shooting-reported-in-downtown-charleston-south-carolina 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof is charged with killing nine persons at a landmark black church in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17. Police and the prosecutors allege the shootings were racially motivated since the victims were black and the shooter, Roof, is a white male who allegedly uttered racist comments.

S.C. Senate votes to remove Confederate flag

by Tim Smith, The Greenville News, and John Bacon, USA TODAY
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Senate has given key approval to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the State House. The Senate voted 37-3 to approve the measure on a third reading Monday afternoon. Under senate rules, it must pass by a two-thirds majority again in a vote that will likely take place Tuesday. State lawmakers began debate Monday on the fate of the Confederate battle flag, less than three weeks after a deadly shooting at a predominantly black church brought renewed attention to the controversial Southern symbol. The EU needs its own Alexander Hamilton
by Trish Regan, Special for USA TODAY

As the eurozone teeters on the brink of a breakup, it's clear — Europe needs its own Alexander Hamilton. As our nation's first Secretary of the Treasury in the late 1780s and early 1790s, Hamilton understood what the eurozone has failed to grasp; in order to succeed as a unit, all states must invest together in a united economic and political future. Less than a decade after our Revolutionary War, Hamilton insisted our federal government absorb the war debts of every state. This meant a state like Virginia — which had already paid off its bills — needed to assume the debts of states like Massachusetts. It was the Colonial America equivalent of getting Germany to assume the debts of Greece. Good luck. Granted, Europe faces a set of challenges that are vastly different from America's in the 1790s. We were a young country with similar cultures amongst our states. In contrast, the eurozone is comprised of 19 diverse countries — countries with their own cultures, languages and storied histories. Northern Europeans are understandably frustrated by their spendthrift, and less successful, southern neighbors. Famed economist Milton Friedman was right to argue against the eurozone before its inception — pointing out that it would eventually prove a political and economic disaster. It seems that disaster is here. And, there's no Hamilton to save us. [...]

Greek fallout has political consequences
by Darrell Delamaide, Special for USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — If financial markets are the best place to gauge what's happening in Greece, the worldwide fiscal picture may not be so bleak after all. There was some selling of stocks around the world, but the euro itself was stable in currency markets and the main index of financial volatility, Vix, was much tamer Monday than it had been in some acute earlier phases of the crisis. Global investors, rightly or wrongly, seem to think the European Union and the European Central Bank have the tools in place to contain any financial fallout from a Greek default and exit from the euro. But they are looking in the wrong place. The real consequences of the Greek debacle are in the political sphere. [...]

Tsipras wins at home, but debt problems remain
by Nick Roumpis and Thodoris Skoulis, Special for USA TODAY

ATHENS — The unexpectedly strong "no" vote Greeks cast against a new international bailout plan was a great political victory for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Yet his personal triumph may soon be overshadowed by a worsening financial crisis. "Nothing changes," said Elena Roumba, 35, an unemployed Athens resident, echoing the sentiment of many in Greece and around Europe. "The crisis remains." Indeed, Sunday's vote does not change the economic crisis the country faces: banks are nearly out of money, and unless international creditors agree to soften their terms for new loans, Greece remains on the verge of financial collapse. by Kim Hjelmgaard, USA TODAY

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras struck a defiant tone Wednesday, urging his fellow nationals in a televised address to vote "No" in a planned Sunday referendum over bailout terms demanded by international creditors. Tsipras said a "No" vote would not mean Greece would leave the eurozone and that European leaders who suggested so were "liars." He said his government was working to get a better deal for the Greek people, particularly the elderly.

by Paul Davidson, USA TODAY

Financial markets are braced for more turbulence this week after Greek voters on Sunday resoundingly rejected the bailout terms demanded by Athens' creditors, increasing the likelihood that the debt-wracked country will exit the euro. "I think the equity market sells off" Monday, said Daniel Morris, global investment strategist for financial services firm TIAA-CREF. [...]

Expect Windows 10 on July 29? Don't hold your breath
by Edward C. Baig, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — PC owners interested in upgrading to Windows 10 have circled July 29 on their calendars. That's the date Microsoft has said the new operating system would be made available to the masses. Now Microsoft is suggesting that some of you will have to wait well beyond launch day. The software, which will be free and deliverable via download, is promised first to the more than 5 million people who helped the company test early builds of Windows 10 as part of the Windows Insider program. Access will be granted next to consumers who "registered" for a copy of the software, beginning about a month ago. Microsoft's Terry Myerson, the executive in charge of Windows, wrote in a company blog on Thursday that "on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows Insiders. From there, we will start notifying reserved systems in waves, slowly scaling up after July 29th. Each day of the roll-out, we will listen, learn and update the experience for all Windows 10 users." by Nancy Armour, USA TODAY Sports

VANCOUVER — Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone joyously lifted the World Cup trophy together. Megan Rapinoe tried to balance it on her head. Carli Lloyd simply smiled, looking both satisfied and stunned at the celebrations going on around her. This is one party that's going to last for a while — as well it should. By beating Japan 5-2 on Sunday, the U.S. women did more than win the World Cup title. They exacted revenge. They silenced those comparisons that have saddled anyone who wore the U.S. jersey since 1999. [...]

Burger King sells gay pride Whopper

Burger King has concocted yet another way to have it your way: a gay pride burger. The Proud Whopper, as it's called, comes wrapped in a rainbow colored wrapper with this inscription: "We are all the same inside." It will be sold through Thursday at one Burger King restaurant on San Francisco's Market Street, that was at the heart of the route for last weekend's 44th annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade. Burger King on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. EST plans to post a two-minute video about the Proud Whopper on its YouTube channel. "It showcases who we are as a brand," says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. "It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression." The inspiration behind the unusual burger wrap and video, he says, is Burger King's localized efforts to put into motion actions that support its recently-tweaked slogan: "Be Your Way." [...]
