MARCH 27 IS ANTI-GUN DEMS' TARGET
We have analyzed the latest legislative
schedule and believe that the gun ban/mag ban attack on gun owners,
hunters and sportsmen (A2006 / S993) is being targeted to reach the Governor's desk by March 27 (next Thursday),
prior to the legislature's customary Spring "budget recess" in April.
Here is the specific timetable that we believe anti-gun Democrats are
trying to achieve:
- Thursday, March 20: Full Assembly vote on A2006
- Monday, March 24: Senate Law & Public Safety Committee hearing on S993 (gun owners must attend!)
- Thursday, March 27: Full Senate vote on S993
- Thursday, March 27: Bill heads to Governor's desk if passed by the Senate and Assembly
PHONY "AMENDMENTS" DO NOT ELIMINATE GUN BAN
Last
week, the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee passed unilateral
"amendments" to A2006, supposedly to eliminate the bill's "unintended"
ban on dozens of popular firearms. The amendments were moved without
any prior review or input from Second Amendment leaders.
Unfortunately, those clueless enough to
unwittingly build a gun ban into their magazine ban are even more
clueless about how to fix the problem. Our legal experts have carefully
reviewed the amendments, and conclude that the "fix" fixes nothing - it
just twists the tangled web of New Jersey gun law even more. It has no impact on the legislation's ban on dozens of popular rifles - they are all still banned.
Do not be fooled by false claims that the
amendments eliminate the gun ban - they assuredly do NOT. They are
crafted with an astonishing lack of insight into firearms, ammunition,
and New Jersey gun law in general, and further muddy already turbid
waters. The gun ban within this legislation remains 100% intact, even
as amended.
If the amendments had been effective, we
would have been the first to publicly acknowledge it, as we did on
numerous pieces of legislation last year and the "defaced" firearms bill
earlier this year. We wish we could say that the voices of gun owners, hunters and sportsmen have been responded to on this issue, but we cannot.
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT BE MISLED BY CLAIMS THAT THE AMENDMENTS ELIMINATE THE GUN BAN - THEY DO NOT.
YOUR MASSIVE & SUSTAINED ACTION IS URGENTLY NEEDED!
The final outcome of A2006 and S993 depends on what gun owners, hunters and sportsmen do this week and next week.
While we are all tired after the last
several weeks, that effort must become merely the starting point from
which we launch a larger, louder, and more sustained campaign, but on an
extremely compressed 10-day timetable.
Here is the urgent mission for gun owners, hunters and sportsmen over the next 10 days:
- On a daily basis, contact your State Senator and both of your Assembly Members
and tell them to oppose A2006/ S993 (gun ban / magazine ban), and
modify the reasonable deviations bill (A2777 - the Senate version is not
yet introduced) with a single word change to restore judicial
discretion on reasonable deviations in firearms transportation. Call, email and fax - do something different every day.

- On a daily basis, email every State Senator and email every Assembly member (not just your own representatives) with the same message. Please also call and fax as many legislators as you can during this period.

- On a daily basis, call, write and/or email the Governor with the same message:

Police" from the drop-down menu of sub-topics.

Plan on coming to Trenton early on Monday, March 24 to testify at the next meeting of the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee, currently scheduled for 10 a.m. at the State House Annex,
125 West State Street, Trenton, New Jersey 08608. Although the agenda
of that meeting has not yet been released, that agenda will likely
include the S993 gun ban / mag ban, and the reasonable deviations bill
(we will issue confirming alerts prior to the meeting - be sure to check prior to coming to Trenton). Gun owners must show up in force at this meeting.
- Write letters to the editor and op-ed pieces in your local media. Sample text to help get you started:
New
Jersey already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country,
including a semi-automatic firearms ban and ammunition magazine capacity
limits. The legislature's latest attempt to further restrict magazine
capacity from 15 to 10 rounds will do nothing to prevent another tragedy
(criminals will ignore it) and everything to interfere with self
defense. If my family faces a home invasion by multiple armed attackers
in the middle of the night, the state should not force me to fumble
around in the dark to change magazines - I should be able to have as
much ammunition as possible to defend myself and my family. This
legislation interferes with self-defense and will cost lives.
WHY YOU MUST ACT EVEN IF IT SEEMS FUTILE
For
those who think that their effort will not make a difference in a State
House dominated by anti-gun extremists, here are some reasons why you must take action anyway between now and March 27:
- The Governor is watchingGovernor
Christie must come to understand that A2006 / S993 is a "third rail"
issue with gun owners, hunters and sportsmen. That understanding is
essential if he is to veto any legislation that reaches his desk. You can do your part by ramping up your efforts from here and taking every action step described above.
Word is already circulating around the State House that legislators
were inundated with record numbers of communications from gun owners
over the past two weeks. Those numbers must increase exponentially over
the next ten days, not just in the Governor's office, but throughout
the entire State House. The Governor needs to understand that one
million gun owners, hunters and sportsmen are up in arms about these
bills and are backing that up with action throughout the State House.

Anti-Gun Legislators Cannot Be Given a Free Pass Or They'll Be Back. Legislators
who won't see the light must feel the heat. They need to understand
that every misguided attack on gun rights is going to be heavily
resisted and an ordeal for them. It's not an accident that we are
"just" fighting one bill right now and not dozens like we were this time
last year. It's because last year became such an embarrassing ordeal for them that they are choosing their targets very carefully this year. If
you want them to think very carefully before moving any more anti-gun
bills this year, then you must do your part for the next ten days and
speak out long and loud. If you give legislators a free pass by not
doing your part, they will be emboldened and try to grab more and more
of our rights.
- Anything Can Happen. If
we learned one thing from the legislative battle of 2013, it's that
anything can happen in Trenton, even against impossible odds. Despite
what seemed like inevitable failure last year, New Jersey gun owners
eventually prevailed, much to the antis' astonishment. Along the way,
we exposed liberal legislators' true agenda ("confiscate, confiscate,
confiscate"), and documented their fundamental lawlessness (illegal
vote-rigging, and attempts to bypass public testimony before voting).
It all contributed to a positive outcome for the Second Amendment, and
we need to adopt that same undefeatable spirit of
taking-action-no-matter-what, even in spite of apparent failure, if we
are to have the chance to again prevail despite overwhelming odds.
Every gun owner, hunter and sportsman needs to take the steps outlined above on a sustained basis between now and March 27, and attend the March 24th
hearing after it is confirmed. Freedom is calling each and every one
of us. Each and every one of us needs to answer that call.
