EMPTY BUILDING ARE COSTING US $1.5 BILLION ANNUALLY - PELOSI DENYS REALITY
Dear Conservatives,
It’s shameful that so much government spending goes toward buying votes and paying off special interests, but hardly surprising in the dog-eat-dog world of politics.
But what’s downright unbelievable is that the deeper we look at the federal budget, the more examples we find of utterly mindless expenses that should be quick and easy to cut -- yet nobody does.
For example, in 2013 the federal government spent over $1.5 billion on the maintenance and utility bills for various buildings that were empty and unused.
Altogether, your tax dollars paid for more than 448 million square feet of unnecessary space.
And this habit has gone on for years -- one warehouse sat completely empty for four years straight, yet the General Services Administration still spent $2 million keeping it open.
Now, many of us have a bit of a pack-rat side, where we can’t bear the thought of throwing away something we might theoretically use again, even if we haven’t in years.
But for most of us, hanging on to old junk doesn’t come with such steep price tags.
And more importantly, not even bureaucracy-scale hoarding can explain the federal government’s most egregious offenses.
The fact is, they aren’t just keeping expensive, obsolete property indefinitely.
They even pay for the upkeep of buildings they’ve scheduled to be demolished!
Does a building really need water, electricity, or cleaning if nobody will ever set foot in it again before it becomes a pile of rubble?
Apparently the bureaucrats in charge of spending your tax dollars think so.
Stories like this prove that wasteful government spending is more than just poor judgment or mistaken priorities . . . it’s about a bureaucratic culture that simply doesn’t respect how hard you worked for the money they take from you.
At the National League of Taxpayers, we do.
That’s why we’ll never stop fighting to bring fiscal responsibility to Washington, D.C., and to keep more of your tax dollars in your pocket.
Sincerely,
Gary Paumen, President
National League of Taxpayers
P.S. If you are able, please consider chipping in with a donation of $10 or more to keep our vital programs running. We receive no government funding.
