Republicans offer a way out of generational poverty
The July 30 letter, "The candidates’ wives reflect differences in political parties," written by a loyal Democrat comparing Ann Romney’s and Michelle Obama’s appearances in Alabama, would be laughable if it weren’t so myopic.
The author cites Mrs. Romney’s appearance at a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser in Springhill as evidence that Republicans don’t care about poor people. I wonder how she feels about our first lady’s lavish vacations that cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
She cites Mrs. Obama’s one appearance at a $200-a-plate fundraiser as evidence of Democrats’ concern for the poor. Guess she missed all the $35,000-a plate fundraisers held for and attended by our president.
President Obama has had more fundraisers than the last five presidents combined. Combined. And his jobs council hasn’t met for six months.
Seems the only thing our president is concerned about is re-election.
The author is right about one thing. Republicans and Democrats do see the problems of poverty, and how to solve them, differently.
Republicans believe the poor need a hand up, a way out of the generational cycle of poverty, an opportunity, a job. The Democrats seem to believe the five-decades-old programs costing billions of dollars are doing the job. Well, they’re not. It’s time for a rethink.
I have no doubt that Democrats care for the poor. Why else would they keep keeping them down and dependent on the government? Oh, wait. That’s where their power comes from.

Obama remains embroiled in Chicago-style politics
The revisionist op-ed column the July 28 Press-Register ("Obama was never part of long-gone ‘Chicago-style politics’") by Jacob Weisberg tries to gloss over the Chicago politics that involved our current occupant of the White House.
If you will recall, in 2004, Democrat Senate candidate Barack Obama was significantly behind Republican candidate Jack Ryan. Jack Ryan was the son of a previous governor of Illinois and a rising star in national politics.
He had been married to actress Jeri Ryan. They amicably separated and requested that the divorce be sealed to spare their minor child.
The Democratic Chicago machine found a friendly judge who ruled that the public needed to know what was in that divorce decree, and ordered it unsealed. This invasion of privacy is unprecedented in any state, including Illinois.
Jack Ryan, to save privacy for his child, immediately dropped out of the Senate race, leaving a clear path for Obama to start his meteoric rise to the White House.
If you will recall, Obama beat Alan Keyes, who jumped into the race at the last minute. Call it old style or new style, but it is still stinking Chicago politics and Obama has always been up to his elbows in it.
Obama’s current attempts to smear another candidate are not working, but he will keep trying. That is how Chicago politics works.
