GEORGIA WARNS CITIES, COUNTIES TO FILE E-VERIFY REPORTS
Georgia state auditors are warning 1,190 city and county government agencies that they risk losing access to state loans and grants for not complying with a key provision of Georgia’s immigration law, which requires government employers with two or more employees to file annual reports certifying they and their public works contractors are E-Verify to confirm newly hired employees are eligible to work in the United States. State offices that hire illegal immigrants could also be fined up to $5,000 for officials who “knowingly” violate the law.
The provision went into effect last year as part of Georgia’s tough immigration law and is hoped to block taxpayer support from going to government contractors who hire illegal immigrants rather than U.S. Citizens.
In 2010, an estimated 325,000 illegal immigrants held jobs in Georgia where unemployment is at 8.9 percent, above the national rate of 8.2 percent.
