THE BATTLE TO COME
The life movement was energized this year with valiant ballot initiative challenges mounted by the Personhood movement, most notably in Mississippi, and dramatic political wins by pro-life Congressional candidates in the key states of New York and Nevada. 2012 can prove to be abortion's Waterloo, if only we will work and pray unceasingly to advance the cause of personhood!
Yet many first principles and moral possibilities that have guided America are today profoundly imperiled. Awakened to our power as free men and women, we can reclaim our liberty and our God-ordained destiny as a decent people, but our work is legion. We are at a critical turning point in the pro-life movement, a moment in history when we seize the rapidly emerging opportunity to affirm the personhood and intrinsic dignity of all nascent human life – or we abandon this fight to the forces of darkness.
I choose to stand foursquare for life, however difficult this battle.
I stand with more than one million Americans who have affirmed the personhood of the innocent unborn by petitioning government. The Personhood movement is rapidly growing, but we need to do much more. Once the humanity is established in law of those who have been conceived, but yet are still in their mother's womb, each will in fact be accorded the same rights as you and I have, so eloquently summarized in the Declaration of Independence. Their God-given status as our brothers and sisters; recognition that they are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, will finally be protected by law.
It was only after William Wilberforce convinced the public that slaves were persons that their liberty was achieved in Great Britain. So this modern-day Personhood movement has the potential to enable those yet to be born to live, as free and equal men and women.
Standing in furious opposition are the forces of death, the Big Abortion lobby, the so-called national elites – and most viciously and unrepentantly, the pro-abortion lobbies of the Republican Party and especially the Democrat Party.
You may have partnered with me over these last few decades in my work battling to win the cause for life since the unconstitutional ruling ofRoe v. Wade first institutionalized child-killing in America. We may have stood side by side in Pro-Life activism around the country, or joined in support of crisis pregnancy centers doing the essential work of life-saving intervention for innocent pre-born infants and their mothers, or perhaps we met through citizen mobilization against death-dealing legislation or honorable Congressional and Statehouse efforts to halt and reverse our nation's destructive course of abortion on demand.
I have found through the years that among the hardest work in Pro-Life is that of awakening a hardened or confused soul to the injustice of abortion, if a person somehow has not the eyes to see nor the ears to hear and comprehend the bloody inhumanity being perpetrated upon a fellow human being that IS every act of abortion. Another difficult arena is defending the inalienable right to life against both direct assault, and dangerous undermining of it as a first principle through well-intentioned but ill-founded incrementalist tactics.
