DHS REFUSING PROPER ARMING OF BORDER PATROL

BORDER PATROL AGENT TRAINING AND WEAPONS NOT UP TO PAR

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General reports in its FY 2012 Annual Performance Plan that training, weapons, and rules of engagement for Border Patrol agents have failed to keep pace with the “increased violence” they are facing on the border. The report also claims “the push to hire new agents may have created a void in experience levels” as an estimated 40% of the agents have no more than two years of on-the-job experience.

One example given in the report is an incident where illegal entrants refused to drop their weapons when ordered to do so by Border Patrol agents – the Border Patrol agents fired beanbags at the illegal immigrants, who returned faire with their assault weapons killing one agent and badly wounding the other. Violence against Border Patrol agents at the border has risen by more than 35% since 2007.
