NGOs Urge Obama to Halt Deportations
Mexican and Mexican-American leaders of U.S.-based immigrant-advocacy groups urged President Obama to issue an executive order halting deportations until the immigration system is reformed. Altogether, 24 pro-amnesty advocacy organizations took part in the three-day gathering focused on persuading President Obama. These groups are blaming the Secure Communities program, increasing deportations, and recent anti-illegal immigration state-based legislation for causing illegal immigrants to be viewed as “criminals and a threat.” These groups claim that the “president of change and hope” has not lived up to the expectations of the illegal immigrant community.
