States raise record number of immigration bills in 2011 | |
In January 2011 alone, more than 600 immigration bills seeking to limit the rights of illegal immigrants have been filed by state lawmakers. Last year, 1,400 bills were introduced but only 131 resolutions were adopted. For every SB 1070, there are many more bills that get introduced but don’t have the political momentum to make their way through committee and hearing and onto the floor. Many states aren’t even willing to put forward tougher immigration bills because of the inevitability of facing costly lawsuits. We have to let states know that illegal immigration is still a priority, just as the economy is, for Americans everywhere. Without our help, states might not realize they already have the momentum they need to pass and enforce tougher illegal immigration laws. |
