Not Your Average 2A Proponent

-A School Shooting Survivor wants more Guns in the Right Hands-

The following excerpts were taken from an article in Recoil Magazine, issue 61, May 2022.

Saugus High School, Santa Clarita, California, November 14, 2019. The shooter was 16 year old Nathaniel Berhow. He used a .45 caliber 1911 style supposedly handmade built from a 1911-type kit.

Berhow was supposedly well-trained. He cleared a jam after firing the first shot and continued. After firing into the crowd of students he turned the gun on himself. School video cameras confirmed this. He died the next day.

Five teens were shot with two being fatal - all within 16 seconds. The motive was never found and Berhow seemed to be an ideal student. He ran track and had “a ton of friends.” Students thought the media was lying. They couldn’t believe it was Berhow. The article made no mention of drugs.

It was found that at least a dozen laws were broken. Well hell, just one more law will fix it, right?

At the time of the shooting a gun control debate was already raging in D.C. Senator Blumenthal was promoting universal background checks, which is of course just another band aid. Senator Murphy wants the Bill on the floor for a vote. The Bill “Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019” passed the House - new requirements for transfers of firearms. Eight republicans were in support. It died in committee.

Another Bill “Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021” passed the House. Expanded background checks are supported by both parties. Both parties also support extreme risk protection orders, also known as “RED FLAG LAWS”. This kind of legislation restricts access to firearms based on a person’s PERCEIVED BEHAVIOR and allows police to seize weapons (confiscate) owned by at-risk individuals. Who will determine someone’s PERCEIVED BEHAVIOR? Who is considered to be at-risk? Who will determine the definition of at-risk? Red Flag Laws are also wide open to abuse from ex-partners, disgruntled employees, etc. We can also add to this neighbors that don’t like you or past friends. The field is wide open for ANYONE to make a complaint about you for ANYTHING. Both parties are for Red Flag Laws, which are unconstitutional. The police do not have to knock or show a warrant. Your PERCEIVED BEHAVIOR gives them the “right” to crash in your door. How many constitutional laws are being broken in the process?

But neither piece of legislation would have prevented Berhow from his act.

California has more than a hundred gun control laws. And despite all those tight restrictions California has seen at least 5 more shootings since November 2019.

The student body of Saugus High School was speaking out about wanting more draconian laws. But one survivor, Kaylee Allen was thinking differently.

Kaylee did much research on many shootings both here and abroad looking for a common denominator. One thing stood out; all were gun-free zones. The other thing that stood out was the media failed to cover the whole story. Kaylee found out Berhow also had a knife in his backpack thinking gun or no gun, Berhow was out to kill that day.

Some of her beliefs: trained teachers that know how to use a gun is a better deterrent. One other is to repeal the gun-free zone act. There are others.

Kaylee Allen is one lone voice in a crowd of thousands. I wish her well.
