NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This past week, the Biden Administration announced that Americans who earn less than $125,000 per year - or $250,000 jointly - are eligible to receive $10,000 in student loan relief, and Pell Grant recipients can receive $20,000. Like everything with the Democrats, this sounds great on paper but, the debt isn’t “forgiven,” it’s just redistributed. And who picks up the tab? Taxpayers who either paid off their loans or chose not to take out a student loan.

This is not only unfair, but it’s unconstitutional. The President of the United States does not have the authority to forgive student loans. Congress does. Even Speaker Pelosi admitted:

“People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see relief for the generation burdened by student loan debt – but this is not how you fix the issue. This is simply a band-aid on a bullet hole. If Democrats want to help those with student loan debt, we must fix the cost of higher education. That includes high college tuition and interest rates. We must also find ways to expand opportunities to encourage enrolling in trade schools or apprenticeships.

The Biden Administration is using this temporary fix to buy votes. Americans need REAL solutions.

The True Cost - Pay More Get Less Tour

Image

Thanks to everyone who participated in Americans for Prosperity - Florida’s True Cost Tour! On Thursday, gas prices temporarily rolled back to $2.38 per gallon at a gas station in Panama City. I stopped by to chat with constituents about the impact of high gas prices and what could help them. It’s clear that the Biden Administration’s failed policies are hurting - not helping - our district.

Experts Meet to Discuss Fentanyl Crisis

Image

This past week, I held a roundtable discussion with local Sheriffs, federal partners, and other law enforcement to discuss our current fentanyl crisis. Last year, the Panama City Police Department arrested a man for trafficking 90 grams of Fentanyl, an amount that could wipe out the entire population of Panama City and Panama City Beach combined. This is a growing issue in our district, and it’s critical that we effectively address this before it gets worse.

Thank you to all who participated today! I appreciate your insight on this epidemic.

IRS Deadline Approaching

The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who've yet to file their 2021 federal income tax return to make sure they take advantage of the deductions and credits for which they're entitled and to file electronically as soon as possible.

This year, the IRS received about 19 million requests for extensions to file until October 17. Those who qualify can prepare and file their return for free with IRS Free File. Electronically filing and choosing direct deposit can help taxpayers get their refund faster. If they owe, sending the tax return with full payment prevents additional interest and penalties. There's no penalty for failure to file if the taxpayer is due a refund.

Constituent Casework Corner

In the Dunn Dispatch last week, I shared a story about a veteran who contacted my office about the Department of Veterans Affairs delaying tests needed for a liver transplant evaluation referral. After a rapid decline in their health, the veteran was readmitted to a local hospital and my office assisted in having them transferred to a VA transplant facility.

While our office couldn’t influence the decision of the transplant committee, I’m happy to report the veteran has officially been listed.  Please join me in praying for this veteran and their family as they press forward waiting for a liver.
