Dear Friend,

November is here and so is the holiday season. The holidays can be a joyful time spent with family and friends. But for many, this time of year can be stressful and difficult. As we approach Thanksgiving, let’s do our best to focus on the good things that have happened this year and what we are most thankful for. Here are a few good news stories from Florida-02 to get you started --

A Marion County icon will soon receive a tribute from a prominent Florida sculptor in honor of the footprint — or pawprint — she has left on the community. Molly, a 14-year-old American boxer mix, is best known as the namesake of “Molly’s Law,” an ordinance that created a county animal abuse registry to prevent convicted abusers from owning, living, or working with animals. The sculpture is meant to raise awareness of animal abuse. Read more here.

For the first time in Franklin County High School’s history, the school is taking part in the Navy Junior ROTC program. Still a fledgling group, the 15 or so members are part of “detachment Eastpoint,” a satellite of the existing unit at Wakulla County High School. Superintendent Steve Lanier was instrumental in working closely with Wakulla Superintendent Robert Pearce in getting the program off the ground. Read more here.

A local boy scout is helping those who want to dispose of old American flags properly. Troop 321 Boy Scout Garret Jensen presented three American flag retirement boxes to the Panama City Fire Department. The scouts will burn under the proper conditions during periodic flag retirement ceremonies. Anyone can take their old worn flags to the fire department and drop them in the box. Click here for more information.
