NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week had a rough start with the severe storms and tornadoes. Thankfully, the damage wasn’t too extensive, but there’s still quite a bit of clean-up to do.
We’re not the only ones who faced crazy weather. Louisiana and Texas faced power outages and unprecedented freezing temperatures this past week. I’ve seen several reports of linemen from throughout the state of Florida heading west to help our neighbors. We all have seen our fair share of disasters, and I’m proud of our district and our state for always rallying together to help those in need.
Speaking of disasters, I’m happy to announce that I’m leading a bill that would accelerate replacing and improving communications facilities in Presidentially-declared disaster areas. This bill is a part of a comprehensive package of 28 bills designed to boost broadband connectivity. You can read more about that below.
Next week, Congress will head back to Washington, D.C. With the second impeachment out of the way, I’m hopeful that we can get back to business. It’s time to get America back to work and our students back in school. Please read about my week below:
This Week in the District Legislative Updates Coronavirus Updates This Week in the District Meeting with Berg Pipe in Panama City
|
On Wednesday, I met with Ingo Reimer, President & CEO of Berg Pipe. Berg Pipe manufactures longitudinal seam-welded large-diameter pipes at their manufacturing facility in Panama City, Florida, and spiral seam-welded large-diameter pipes at their manufacturing facility in Mobile, Alabama in nearly every size desired.
During the meeting, Ingo and I discussed how the pipe industry will be affected by the Biden Administration’s cancellation of the Keystone XL project. Republicans in Congress, particularly on the Energy and Commerce Committee, are united in the fact that the Keystone Pipeline should be built. Several amendments were offered in the recent E&C committee markup of the new COVID-19 relief bill reversing the Biden Administration’s cancelation of the project. Unfortunately, these amendments failed on a party-line vote.
Thank you, Ingo, for being a great host and for sharing your experience and concerns with me!
Congratulations, Timothy Jolicoeur!

I called Timothy Jolicoeur this week to congratulate him for receiving an early appointment to West Point. This driven young man has been chasing his dream of serving his country since he was eleven years old.
“A career in military service will give me the opportunity to fight and strive for the same thing our Founding Fathers fought for freedom for myself and those who will come after me,” said the Suwannee High School Senior.
Timothy has a bright future ahead of him and I'm confident that he will continue to make his hometown of Live Oak and the entire Second Congressional District proud. Read more here. Legislative Updates House Energy & Commerce Committee
This past week, the Republicans of the Energy & Commerce Committee announced a comprehensive package of 28 bills that aim to turbocharge public and private investment by promoting new and upgraded infrastructure deployments, boosting competition, streamlining permitting processes, facilitating broadband deployment on federal lands, and closing the digital divide in both rural and urban areas.
My bill, The Connecting Communities Post Disasters Act, that would accelerate replacing and improving communications facilities in Presidentially-declared disaster areas is included in this package.

Leah Dunn: Don’t delay life-saving health care appointments Constituent Casework Corner
A constituent filed with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to have their payee representative removed because the representative misused their SSA benefits. After months of inaction by the SSA, the constituent contacted my office. We worked with SSA to have the request processed and the constituent was approved to oversee their benefits.
