Downers Grove, IL – On October 21, 2022, pro-lifers observed an ambulance in the parking lot of Access Health Center at about 12 p.m. The nurse who called 911 said the doctor was unable to complete an abortion on a woman because of “heavy bleeding.” When asked if the patient was in severe pain, the nurse stated: “I would say, like, moderate to severe cramping, like menstrual cramping in the uterus.” But the computer-aided dispatch transcript revealed the patient was suffering from a “significant hemorrhage” and “lacerations.” It also noted a request for an interfacility transfer and “palliative care.”
The World Health Organization defines palliative care as “… an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems… .”
Since palliative care typically refers to a long-term process of relieving pain for life-threatening illness, it is odd to see the term referenced on an emergency transport report.
After the caller explained that the patient was in the operating room with the abortionist, a distressed woman could be heard crying. It is not known whether the disconcerting outburst came from the patient or perhaps a distraught family member or friend.
