Dear Friend,

One of the things I appreciate most about Florida-02 is the rich history. I’ve had the privilege of meeting several individuals who have had a front-row seat to the evolution of North Florida. One of those individuals is Ms. Annie Gibson of Marianna who turned 100 on January 23rd, 2022. Happy belated birthday, Ms. Gibson! 100 is a major milestone and I hope this year treats you well.

Here are a few more good things that have happened in our district this week --

Fueled by a brilliant eagle on the 16th hole that will go down as one of the best moments in the 63-year history of The American Express, Tallahassee native Hudson Swafford stayed ahead of a massive pack of chasers in the closing holes last week to win for the third time in his career. Swafford is now the ninth player to win multiple times in this event. This win comes just one month after his father, David Swafford, died and in the week of his father's birthday. Read more here.

This year, Arnold High School in Panama City Beach has been honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. This award represents how the Marlins are encouraging girls to take interest in computer science and STEM. As one student said: “A lot of girls our age are intimidated to go into the STEM field…” As unfortunate as this is, it’s a common problem. I’m proud of Arnold H.S. for empowering ALL of their students and encouraging STEM. Read more here.

Local officials joined the Lake City Garden Club in honoring Florida Forestry Association President Carlton Jones at its recent Arbor Day celebration. A long-time Lake City resident, Jones was introduced to forestry by his father-in-law in 1991. Jones explained that the forest industry in Florida plants twice as many trees as it harvests. He shared that sustainability is key to the future of Florida forestry. Congratulations, Carlton, and thank you! Read more here.
