NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week, I had the privilege of speaking at the 2nd Annual Gathering in Gilchrist, hosted by Gilchrist County Sheriff Bobby Schultz. Several Florida Sheriffs, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, and several other local and state leaders were in attendance. During my speech, I took the opportunity to thank our law enforcement and first responders for their selfless service. It takes a tremendous amount of courage and sacrifice to do what they do every day. Unfortunately, some in Washington take our law enforcement for granted and are still supporting defunding the police. However, many of the areas that have defunded the police have also seen a rise in crime over the last year. Coincidence? I think not.
The rise in crime has also led to an increase in ambush-style attacks on law enforcement. These attacks increased 115% last year, and according to the National Fraternal Order of Police, at least 30 police officers were shot in January. This is unacceptable. To add to the threat of being under attack, our law enforcement officers are also struggling with their mental health – and who can blame them when they are continuously villainized by the far Left?
Like the military, our law enforcement and first responders experience a great deal of trauma and see things that stay with them for the rest of their lives. Without support, it’s hard to overcome feelings of hopelessness. We’ve lost too many great officers throughout my district, and too many throughout the state of Florida. It’s time for Washington to stop villainizing those who protect and serve. 
Before I tell you more about my week, I want to take a moment to honor my friend and colleague Representative Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) who passed away from kidney cancer this week.
Jim was always calm, dignified, and the definition of a gentleman. He also did not seek pity for his clearly terminal disease. He remained focused on serving his constituents and his country to the very end. Rep. Hagehorn was a good man and a class act. We were fortunate to have him working alongside us. He was what we in the military refer to as a "foxhole friend," a friend who has your back until he takes his last breath. Please join me in praying for his family during this difficult time. Rest in peace and God bless, my friend.

Meeting with Associated Builders & Contractors
On Wednesday, I had a great lunch with the Associated Builders and Contractors North Florida Chapter. They were also kind enough to give me a tour of Culpepper Construction’s latest project. The classroom/auditorium building at The Florida State University School will be 45,000 sqft and provides space for the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs at the school and a 750-seat performing arts center.
Visiting Malcom Randall VA Medical Center
On Thursday, I stopped by the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center to visit with the new Executive Director, David Isaacks, and staff. Thank you, David, for the update on operations! I’m confident the facility is in good hands under your command.
What’s Happening on Capitol Hill
Letter to the President Regarding Iranian Sanctions
This past week, I joined Representatives Gallagher and Waltz in a letter to President Biden making clear that any agreement regarding Iranian sanctions that are forged without formal Congressional approval will be temporary and non-binding.
Congress hopes to see a day where U.S. sanctions can be lifted; however, this will not happen if we provide sanctions relief that will fuel the current Iranian regime’s corruption.
If the agreement is done without formal Congressional authority, the letter guarantees Congress will: - Oppose any agreement that doesn’t first verify nuclear activities and sponsorship of terrorism
- View the agreement as non-binding
- Warn the public and private sector about any dangers of such an agreement
- Work to reimpose sanctions
- Oppose any attempt to rescind the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization
- Investigate any connections with the Russians regarding their invasion of Ukraine

Health Updates
Chipley Hospital Offers COVID-19 Treatment
Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley is now one of only 23 sites in the state offering the prophylactic injection for COVID-19 known as Evusheld. Not to be confused with a Covid vaccine, the treatment is similar to monoclonal infusions in nature; however, Evusheld is used to help prevent the virus, rather than treat it. The purpose of Evusheld is to protect those who cannot take the vaccine (those who are immune-compromised or have allergies to components of the vaccine). Read more here.
