Dear Friend,

This past weekend marked three years since Hurricane Michael. Many people were sharing their stories and photos, and it reminded me of how far we’ve come in three short years. The scenery has changed, but our district’s sense of community and perseverance has not. Here are a few good news stories from throughout our district that further reminds us how fortunate we are to live in Florida-02 --

The Suwannee County Fire Rescue recently rescued a six-month-old beagle named Emmy, who was stuck in the bottom of a sinkhole on her owners’ property. Emmy’s family made several attempts to get the puppy out, but the at least 50 ft sinkhole proved to be too much. The fire rescue team has rescued cows and horses previously and was familiar with the property. They were able to pull little Emmy to safety. Read more here.

Quilting for a cause is what the Tallahassee Senior Center is doing to help support the Sleep in Heavenly Peace children's program. The program builds new beds for kids who don't have a place to sleep, and the seniors are making sure those kids are warm and comfortable. They've made over fifty quilts for the program which will be donated to local families. Read more here.

Good news for Florida fishermen -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is reopening federal waters to for-hire fishermen from Oct. 15 until Nov. 6 to give them a chance to catch the remaining 670,000 pounds left in this year’s Red Snapper quota. The season only applies to federal waters, which extend from nine to 200 miles off of Florida’s coast. This is great for local businesses and tourism. Read more here.
