John Brennan says he’s ‘very concerned’ as calls for Trump to ‘declassify everything’ grow

Former CIA Director John Brennan admitted he is very “concerned” about what President Donald Trump may do in what he believes are the remaining days of his presidency.

Brennan appeared to have gone into panic mode over the president’s decision to fire Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Monday, telling CNN’s Chris Cuomo this week that Vice President Mike Pence should “seriously consider” invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.

With Democrats certain that their presidential nominee Joe Biden has won the election, despite pending lawsuits and vote recounts, Trump’s latest moves have many on edge as they fear he could set off a wave of actions that could expose them before he leaves office.

Many of the president’s supporters, including his son, Donald Trump Jr., have called on him to “declassify everything” as senior intelligence officials have reportedly fought against the administration’s efforts to release certain documents related to Russia’s alleged interference with the 2016 election.

“It’s clear that Mark Esper was removed as Secretary of Defense because he rebuffed Donald Trump’s efforts to politicize the U.S. Military. And I think it’s quite apparent from reporting that Mark Esper has stood up to Donald Trump repeatedly. Who knows what else he has refused to do?” Brennan said, speaking with Cuomo about the “very, very worrisome development.”

“And the Secretary of Defense position is, I think, the most consequential position in the U.S. government aside from the President of the United States because it is the Secretary of Defense who carries out the orders given by a president for military operations,” he continued.

“And if Mark Esper has been pushed aside because he is not listening to Donald Trump, carry out these orders, who knows what his successor, this Acting Secretary, Chris Miller is going to do if Donald Trump does give some type of order that really is counter to, I think, what our national security interests need to be,” Brennan added.

The former Obama administration official expressed his worry that Trump could “do a lot of damage in 70 days” and may “carry out these vendettas against other individuals,” echoing the triggered Democrats and career officials in the intelligence community who are worried about plans to declassify documents.

An intelligence report declassified by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe back in September revealed that Brennan had briefed Obama back in 2016 about a plot by Hillary Clinton, the Democrat presidential nominee at the time, to spin a Russian collusion narrative against then-GOP nominee Trump.

Earlier this year, then-acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell declassified documents that showed Brennan had deliberately hidden intelligence showing Russia favored a Clinton win, instead pushing the false narrative that they were for Trump.

“It is clear that Donald Trump is trying to exercise the power because he can. And he is going to settle scores,” a rattled Brennan told Cuomo this week, admitting his fears.

“But I’m very concerned what he might do in his remaining 70 days in office. Is he going to take some type of military action? Is he going to release some type of information that could in fact threaten our national security interests?” he asked.

The CNN host questioned, “what can be done to stop anything he wants to do in the next 70 days?”

“Well, if Vice President Pence and the Cabinet had an ounce of fortitude and spine and patriotism, I think they would seriously consider invoking the 25th Amendment and pushing Donald Trump out, because he is just very unpredictable now. He’s like a cornered cat – tiger. And he is going to lash out,” Brennan replied.

“And the fact that again that he has the powers of the presidency in his hands is quite worrisome,” he added.

Earlier this week in an interview with MSNBC, Brennan had encouraged current CIA Director Gina Haspel and FBI Director Chris Wray to “hold fast and hold strong,” directing them to “not give in to any directives that the president might, Donald Trump might, issue that would impact our national security.”

Brennan’s worried rant on CNN sparked plenty of social media reactions.
