ILLINOIS DREAM ACT TO BECOME LAW TODAY The Illinois Dream Act will allow the children of illegal immigrants to receive scholarships at private colleges and enroll in state college savings programs. To qualify, students must have attended high school in Illinois for at least three years. This takes Illinois’ sanctuary state status one step further following Quinn’s announcement in May that Illinois would be the first to refuse participation in the Secure Communities program by no longer providing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) any information on the arrests of illegal immigrants. WASHINGTON’S NEW DRIVER’S LICENSE POLICY QUICKLY SHOWS POSITIVE RESULTS Flooded by requests from out-of-state driver’s license applicants and a magnet for identification fraud, public pressure forced the Department of Licensing to change policies last December and require more stringent proof of residency – and it’s already working. In the first half of this year, 5,346 people didn’t provide a Social Security number when obtaining a license – in all of 2010, more than 23,000 did not. When accounting for all out-of-state license applicants, 16% failed to provide a Social Security number in 2010 which has dropped to 8% through June of this year. |
