1.  NLRB General Counsel Nominee’s Union Gave Nearly $1 Million To Lawmakers In June
One day after the constitutionally-challenged NLRB member Richard Griffin was supposedly ousted as part of Senate Republicans’ giving in to Harry Reid’s threat to use the “nuclear option,” Griffin was nominated to become the NLRB’s general counsel. One might wonder, how many were in on the deal before it was made and at what price?

The surprise announcement of Griffin’s new nomination was made on the heels of Barack Obama having nominated, based on the advice of AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka, two new members to the NLRB–one of whom is a recently retired associate general counsel for the AFL-CIO. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

1.  ‘This Town’ Needs an Enema
Mark Leibovich of the New York Times has written a pretty scathing book about Washington, DC, called This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral-Plus, Plenty of Valet Parking!-in America’s Gilded Capital. It is a pretty accurate portrayal of the Washington, DC more and more Americans have come to hold in contempt. There exists in Washington a new aristocracy where, for example, a poor boxer from Searchlight, NV, can get elected to the United States Senate, become wealthy enough to live at the Ritz, and see his family profit from K Street.

It is a city where the new aristocrats move and do not want to leave. It is a town in need of an enema.

Consider the Republicans in the United States Senate up for re-election in 2014. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Morning Briefing
For July 17, 2013

1.  Republicans Surrender
Senate Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, have given up the filibuster for executive nominations. Under a deal struck, the Democrats will not deploy the nuclear option, but the Republicans will let the President fill a number of positions the GOP has been blocking. Among the positions will be the ever important National Labor Relations Board, which has pursued a disastrous anti-free market agenda.

As Senator Ted Cruz noted, the GOP preserved the right to surrender in the future. What he means is that the GOP folded, but kept the appearance of still having a filibuster for executive nominations in place.

Until the GOP filibusters other executive nominees the President wants. They will then either cave again or see the nuclear option then. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →

Morning Briefing
For July 16, 2013

1.  An Ecumenical Hope Post Zimmerman Trial
The death of Trayvon Martin and the Zimmerman trial show there are deep wounds and grievances in this country and too many people who profit from fanning the flames. Too many in the white community see violence in the black community and think, “That’s their problem. Blacks killing blacks, we’ll let them figure it out.” But it is not their problem. It is all of our problem. No one wants to be a victim of crime. Besides, much of the crime is not related to race, but related truly to income and only superficially related to skin color. This is a problem that will continue to fester unless there is more dialogue. White and black America more and more speak in different language and, more and more, upper income white America speaks in a language completely different from the poor and middle class regardless of race.

1.  Activists Need To Tell Dirty Harry, “Don’t Nuke The Senate For Union Bosses!”
According to reports, Harry Reid and his fellow Senate Democrats are looking more and more like they are going to push the nuclear option on behalf of unions bosses in order to confirm Barack Obama’s National Labor Relations Board nominees–including his two constitutionally-challenged “recess” appointments. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
