ALERT: We've all heard the reports about how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has admitted that they deliberately harassed conservative political organizations claiming tax exempt status, such as Tea Party groups, by singling them out for additional scrutiny and investigation. Currently, IRS employees who discriminate against taxpayers can ONLY be fired at the "discretion" of their supervisors. Thankfully, Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) have introduced a bill that would change that, and increase the maximum penalty to a $5,000 fine, 5 years in prison, or both -- which is the same maximum penalty for a member of the president's cabinet who directs an employee to take that sort of action. Dubbed the "Taxpayer Nondiscrimination and Protection Act," this bill would amend Title 18 of the U.S. Code to make it a crime for an IRS employee to discriminate against an individual or group on the basis of their protected rights. In addition, it expressly clarifies that political speech and political expressionare protected rights.
