NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This past week, I joined my fellow House Republicans in delivering on our promise to end the COVID-19 National Emergency. Our schools reopened, Americans are returning to work, and mask mandates are lifted. It’s time to return to a sense of normalcy where the federal government does not have unlimited authority over your life.

In addition to this bill, we also voted for the SHOW UP Act of 2023, which would end teleworking for federal employees and require them to return to the office. Federal employees are public servants, and it’s time that they return to the office to serve the people.

COVID-19 is still present; however, we’ve come a long way since 2020. It’s time to end the hysteria and get back to work.

A Recap of My Week
Energy & Commerce Committee

On Wednesday, the House Energy & Commerce Committee met to discuss two very important topics, our ongoing fentanyl crisis and the origins of COVID-19.

During the Health Subcommittee’s “Lives Worth Living” hearing, we heard from law enforcement, policy leaders, and parent advocates about the severity of the fentanyl crisis, how we can protect critical lifelines, and how to combat discrimination against those with disabilities. You can watch my remarks here.

Meeting Boris Johnson

I had the honor of meeting the Right Honorable Boris Johnson, MP and Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the other night on Capitol Hill. It was great to hear his perspective on foreign relations. Thank you for joining us!

Here’s What I’m Supporting

H.R. 314, the FORCE Act (Fighting Oppression Until the Reign of Castro Ends) - The FORCE Act would prevent the President from removing Cuba from the State Sponsor of Terrorism List until Cuba meets the requirements of Section 205 of the LIBERTAD Act (P.L. 104-114). In short, this bill asks Cuba to apply with existing U.S. law before their State Sponsors of Terrorism designation is removed.

H.R. 128, Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2023 - This bill places a one-year moratorium on all federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which benefits from taxpayer money while performing and profiting from elective abortions. In addition to the moratorium, the legislation would further increase funding for community healthcare centers that actually focus on comprehensive care for women and their babies. These Federally Qualified Health Centers not only offer screening and prevention services, pap smears, cancer screenings, breast exams, and prenatal services, but they also offer a full spectrum of other primary care services which Planned Parenthood fails to provide.

H.Con.Res.9, Denouncing the horrors of socialism - This concurrent resolution denounces socialism and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.

IRS: Tax Filing Season – April 18th Deadline

The IRS kicked off the 2023 tax filing season this past week, focusing on improving service and a reminder to taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit to speed up refunds and avoid delays.

Taxpayers have until April 18 to file their taxes this year, but some taxpayers living overseas and disaster victims may have later filing deadlines. Alabama, California, and Georgia storm victims now have until May 15 to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

CASEWORK CORNER

A veteran who recently relocated from out of state was having extreme difficulties transferring their Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare to the local system. After making numerous phone calls and being in desperate need of prescription refills, the veteran contacted my office.  We immediately got in touch with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veteran received a phone call the same day, was enrolled into the local system, and was scheduled to meet with their new PCP and have prescriptions refilled.
