NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week, the White House tweeted and quickly deleted the following:
What the White House neglected to include was the reasoning for this increase – skyrocketing inflation. Seniors on fixed incomes are struggling to make ends meet with the massive increase in the cost of goods and services. This is not a reason to celebrate. This tweet proves that the Biden Administration and Democrats are completely out of touch.
No matter what spin you put on it, there is nothing positive about failed policies and weak leadership. I’ve sat down with several seniors throughout our district, and many cannot afford their medications or gas to get to their doctors’ appointments. Families in our district are facing similar woes. Americans deserve policies that are worth celebrating. Here’s what I would like to see – - Energy Independence
- Less frivolous spending
- Fewer taxes and more income
- Lower prescription drug prices
- A secure Southern border
Under the Republicans’ Commitment to America plan, I’m confident we can achieve all these things. These ideas are built off REAL conversations with REAL constituents facing REAL issues. It’s time for REAL solutions worth touting, not partisan spins, lies, and deleted tweets. Please read about my week below:

A Recap of My Week Visiting a Local Veteran
On Thursday, I stopped by to present Lawrence Miller in Lake City with a copy of his DD214, a document used to confirm his time of service in the U.S. Military. Mr. Miller contacted my office for help with obtaining his Veteran ID Card (VIC), which he could not get without a copy of his DD214. The original document was destroyed during a fire in St. Louis, but my team got a copy of the burned document and a new copy for his records. Since I was passing through his town, I stopped at his house to personally give him his documents.
Thank you to the entire Miller family for the warm welcome! It was an honor meeting a fellow veteran. Here’s What I’m Supporting
The TEAM Act (H.R. 2127) - This bill would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to expand healthcare and benefits for veterans with conditions related to toxic substance exposure. Veterans who were exposed to toxic substances, radiation, or other conditions, and were awarded certain medals are eligible for inclusion in the Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry. Additionally, veterans who have been identified by the Department of Defense to have been possibly exposed during service to an open burn pit, toxic substance, or specified hazardous sites, would be covered.
Simplifying Grants Act of 2022 (H.R. 9148) – This bill would simplify the process for already existing and new grant programs in nonurbanized areas. It would require each agency to make a publicly available checklist that includes each requirement for every step of the grant process.
I recently joined Senator Rubio and members of the Florida Delegation on a letter to U.S. Food & Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf requesting an update on Florida’s Canadian Prescription Drug Importation Program application and expeditiously approve Agency for Health Care Administration’s proposal. The program would facilitate the commercial importation of certain prescription drugs into Florida from approved Canadian suppliers to help mitigate rising costs.
Updates From Agencies VA Announcements Update from the IRS
Last month, the IRS began sending letters to more than 9 million individuals and families who appear to qualify for a variety of key tax benefits but didn’t claim them by filing a 2021 federal income tax return. Many in this group may be eligible to claim some or all the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC), the Child Tax Credit (CTC), the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and other tax credits depending on their personal and family situation.
The IRS is sending special reminder letters to people who appear to qualify for the CTC, RRC, or EITC but haven't yet filed a 2021 return to claim them. The letter, printed in both English and Spanish, provides a brief overview of each of these three credits.

In February of this year, an elderly constituent came to my office for help with their Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) situation. After Hurricane Michael, they were awarded repair assistance on their home that was heavily damaged. After several months of back of forth, FEMA notified them they were ineligible for the funds as FEMA did not believe the home was their primary residence at the time of the storm. Through months of work done by my staff that culminated in an oral hearing with a FEMA adjudicator, FEMA acknowledged their mistake, canceled the repayment requirement, and refunded all payments made since the debt was called in full.
