NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

For the past two years, American families have suffered under President Biden and Speaker Pelosi’s failed policies, and they have no plan to fix it. Republicans do. This past week, House Republicans announced the Commitment to America plan to get our nation back on track. Here’s what it includes –

  • Fight inflation & support working Americans
  • Reduce gas prices & restore energy independence
  • Secure the supply chain & restock our shelves
  • Secure the Southern Border
  • Reduce crime, back the blue, & stop Fentanyl
  • Defend our nation with peace through strength
  • Ensure parents have a voice in education
  • Confront big tech & advance free speech
  • Better, healthier, & longer lives for all Americans

Republicans are committed to creating an economy that’s strong, a nation that’s safe, a future that’s built on freedom, and a government that’s accountable for the American people.

Before I recap my week, I would like to take a moment to wish a dear friend, Bishop Ella Speed, a happy belated 102nd birthday. Mrs. Ella’s heart for serving others is unmatched and her energetic spirit is infectious. Make no mistake, age is just a number. Mrs. Ella is still just as sharp as she was in her younger days, and she has not stopped serving and comforting others.

Happy birthday, Bishop Speed! Thank you for all you do!

House Energy & Commerce Committee

Image

This past week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee marked up 18 “Resolutions of Inquiry”, which would have served as document requests necessary for Congress to conduct proper oversight of the Biden Administration. We must hold President Biden accountable for crises such as surging inflation, rising energy costs, empty store shelves, chaos at the border, and record-high fentanyl poisonings and overdose deaths. Democrats on the committee chose to stonewall congressional oversight to protect President Biden’s radical agenda rather than support accountability on behalf of the American people.

Here’s What I’m Supporting…

I recently cosponsored the Jackie Walorski Maternal and Child Home Visiting Reauthorization Act of 2022. This bill will have a huge impact on the lives of children and families in Florida and across the country. Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) is a bipartisan, voluntary, evidence-based program that provides vital support for vulnerable families. This program will expire on September 30. Without further congressional action, vulnerable families will start to lose services early in January.

I also joined a letter with Senator Marco Rubio to Congressional leaders about the national security implications of allowing offshore energy leasing and development east of the Military Mission Line in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico (EGOM). In 2006, Congress passed the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA), which prohibited oil and gas exploration and development, among other places, east of the Military Mission Line in the EGOM. In 2020, President Trump extended the protections for the Gulf Test Range. Unfortunately, the Inflation Reduction Act stripped that protection and opens the door to offshore wind development in the Gulf Test Range.

Check Your Disaster Supplies

With another storm approaching the Gulf of Mexico, I encourage you to check your disaster supplies and review your family’s emergency plan. We do not have confirmation on where the storm is heading, but it’s better to prepare now just in case.

However, be mindful that your neighbors are in need of supplies, too. Please be patient and only get what you need.

You can double-check the Disaster Supply Kit Checklist, and stay tuned for updates from my office.

Passport Awareness Month

Image

Passport Awareness Month is all about motivating people to apply for their passports in the fall or winter when demand is down. This year, we encourage you to routinely check your passport’s expiration date and remember that many countries require a minimum of six months of passport validity.

Constituent Casework Corner

A constituent contacted my office for help with their disability insurance after spending nearly three years fighting with the Social Security Administration. When they were finally approved for the insurance, an error in the system prevented them from accessing their Medicare benefits. We were able to work with both the Social Security Administration and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to have the issue promptly resolved.
