NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This past week, the Commerce Department announced that U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by 0.9% in the last three months. This is the second quarter the GDP fell, which shows an economic decline. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a recession.

The Biden Administration and Democrats are scrambling to cover up their failure. They’re even trying to redefine what a recession is. As the old saying goes – “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”

What’s more disturbing than the Left’s continuous attempts to change the English language is their complete disregard for the damage they’ve caused. In the same week we found out the GDP fell, again, the Democrats announced their latest tax-and-spend package. This package would do the following:

  • Raise taxes on businesses, driving up costs for consumers and exacerbating the current supply chain crisis

  • Allow the IRS to hire 87,000 new agents to target American families and businesses

  • Implement socialist price control schemes for prescription drugs that will negatively impact seniors, patients, those with rare diseases, and their families

  • Extend Obamacare subsidies through 2025, benefiting the wealthy and subsidizing people who already have insurance

  • Spend $369 billion on “Green New Deal” initiatives.
The current inflation is already hurting hardworking Americans like you. The last thing America needs is more taxes and frivolous spending.

A Recap of My Week
Honoring Buck O’Neil on the House Floor

Image

This past week, I had the privilege of honoring baseball legend Buck O'Neil on the House floor. The Carrabelle native was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. The Hall of Fame's recognition of his incredible career and contributions to America's favorite pastime was long overdue.

Watch my House floor speech honoring Buck O’Neil here.

Fighting for Economic Opportunities

This past week, I sent a letter to the President and CEO of North American Aerospace Industries (NAAI), an aviation recycling company, to describe the benefits Project Alpha, the aviation real estate development at the Tallahassee International Airport (TLH), would bring to the City of Tallahassee.

The City of Tallahassee has a lot to offer, and companies are taking notice. Project Alpha is a promising plan to revitalize TLH while also generating over a thousand jobs. If this plan moves forward, our capital city will be the best option for relocation. I encourage NAAI and other companies to see this potential and consider Tallahassee.

In addition to this, I sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) urging them to investigate an allegation that a former Coast Guard commander with access to "non-public information" wrote Austal USA's proposal for the $3 billion contract it won over the Panama City shipbuilder on June 30.

This allegation is deeply troubling. Government contracts should be awarded fairly; they should be awarded to the company that can do the best job. I’m concerned that Austal secured this contract under false pretenses, and this will ultimately hurt our national security and cost the U.S. millions of dollars.

The men and women of my district worked hard on Stage 1 of the Offshore Patrol Cutter program, and they did so efficiently and ethically. They deserve an honest process. I will keep pushing the Department of Homeland Security to investigate this decision.

Bills I’m Supporting

Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021 (H.R. 2252) – This bill would posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal to Emmett and Mamie Till-Mobley. The medal would then be displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

H. Res. 1255 – This resolution would express continued support for all U.S. Border Patrol agents who carry out the important mission of securing our borders.

Letters I’ve Signed

I recently joined a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin concerning the June 30th vaccine mandate deadline for the National Guard and its impact on military readiness. In the letter, my colleagues and I ask the Secretary to consider natural immunity and reconsider the Department’s COVID vaccine mandate.

IRS: “Don’t Wait Until October”

The Internal Revenue Service is reminding the estimated 19 million taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2021 tax return that they don't have to wait until mid-October to file. If a taxpayer has all the necessary information to file an accurate return, they can file electronically at any time before the October deadline and avoid a last-minute rush to file.

Taxpayers who requested more time to file an accurate return have until October 17, 2022. Those who have what they need to file, however, should file as soon as possible to avoid delays in processing their return. Read more here.

Constituent Casework Corner

My office has received numerous calls and e-mails from constituents who received the American Community Survey (ACS) from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The ACS is done annually to help local officials, community leaders, and businesses review changes taking place in their communities.

The question my office most frequently receives is: “Are you required to respond?” The answer is yes.  The U.S. Census Bureau is required by law to keep your information confidential. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify your household. Your survey answers will only be used to create statistics.

You can return your survey in the mail, or you can submit it online.

Other information about the ACS, including other FAQs, can be found on their website.
