NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This week, the House FINALLY passed a bill to provide more security to the U.S. Supreme Court justices and their families following an attempt to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. What I find deeply troubling is that Speaker Pelosi blocked three requests to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote. She waited a month to do anything about the bullying from the Radical Left, and even though we passed the bill, 27 House Democrats voted against it.

Ensuring the safety of our Judicial Branch should be a bipartisan issue.

Supreme Court Justices shouldn’t face assassination attempts, and their families should be secure to go about their daily routines. This disgusting bullying is shameful, and House Democrats should set a better example. Our Supreme Court exists to ensure law and order. They keep executive power in check. We must keep our justices protected to preserve our constitutional republic.

The National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association’s Youth Tour made a stop at Capitol Hill this past week. This program gives high school juniors the chance to learn about the importance of public service and leadership. I'm grateful to our rural electric co-ops for working to ensure we have safe and reliable electricity and contributing to our communities.

Thank you, Central Florida Electric Cooperative, Inc., Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative, Inc., Clay Electric Co-op, Escambia River Electric Cooperative, Inc., Glades Electric Cooperative Inc., Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative, Inc., Suwannee Valley Electric Cooperative, Talquin Electric Cooperative, Tri-County Electric Cooperative Inc, and West Florida Electric Cooperative for your participation in this valuable program!

The NRECA Youth Tour

  • The Luke and Alex School Safety Act (H.R. 750) – This bill requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish a Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices for use by state and local educational and law-enforcement agencies, institutions of higher education, health professionals, and the public.

  • The Securing Our Students Act (H.R. 7942) - This bill would clarify that school districts and non-public schools can immediately amend their plans under the American Rescue Plan and use those funds to address their school safety needs.

  • The Fallen Heroes Flag Reauthorization Act of 2022 (H.R.8050) - In honor of Flag Day, this bill would reauthorize the Fallen Heroes Flag Program for an additional five years. The program provides a free Capitol-flown flag at their request to the family of a firefighter, LEO, or another first responder who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Letters I’m Supporting

I recently signed a letter to the Attorney General expressing concern regarding recent attacks against pro-life organizations following the leak of the U.S. Supreme Court’s drafted opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. The letter directly requests a response detailing the Department of Justice’s plan to investigate the domestic terrorism facing religious organizations, nonprofits, and crisis pregnancy centers.

I also signed a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler objecting to the SEC’s new rules that will require publicly traded companies to disclose climate data and climate risks. These rules are out of the SEC’S authority and setting climate policy standards is not a core objective of the SEC. My colleagues and I are calling for the SEC to rescind these new rules and return to a disclosure-based regime that facilitates investment, not one that controls or comments on climate-related outcomes.

Updates From Agencies

Announcement from the CDC

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) announced that the Order requiring persons to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States, is rescinded.

This means air passengers will not need to get tested and show the COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the U.S. Read more here.

Information for the Baby Formula Shortage

There’s nothing as important to families as the health and safety of their babies, and the formula shortage has left many people feeling anxious about how they’ll feed them. Some young children, teens, and adults with medical needs also rely on formula for their nutrition. They may be impacted by the shortage, too.

We know it’s not easy to change your baby’s diet. However, if you can’t find formula in stock, here are some tips for finding safe substitutes.

All State/County Health Department WIC programs will assist families in locating baby formula supplies. Any child under age 5 qualifies for the WIC program benefits. Click here for more about WIC.

Thank you for your continued energy and enthusiasm, as reflected in your letters and Facebook posts. If you haven’t already, LIKE my Facebook page. You can also follow me on Twitter @DrNealDunnFL2.

Constituent Casework Corner

A constituent contacted my office after waiting nearly two years for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to schedule the interview for their pending I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. We were able to work with USCIS to have the file reviewed. It was determined additional documentation was needed, and the interview was subsequently scheduled.
